Haven't posted lately guys. I've been putting many irons in the fire so to speak. This was a stave that I blanked out and screwed the handle area up so I built another from the leftover veneers I put on my sinew backed bow. These numbers are seemingly fast but the weight checks out.
-
She has taken about 1/2 inch of set. 64.5 inches nock to nock, 1.25 inches wide at the fade smoothly tapering to 3/8 nocks. It draws 49 lbs at 28 inches and the arrows were 512 grains. I'm really blown away by it.
-
Nice job! Is this a sinewed bow? I couldn't get that straight. Great numbers no matter what ;D ;D Congratulations :)
-
No sinew on this one. I have a sinew backed bow made for the bow trade. It's not as awesome as this one but it performs well
-
Double good :D
-
What kind of wood is it? Is it backed? I need more info. It seems very fast for what I've come to expect a profile can deliver. I've had to have lots of reflex but you don't seem to have much. I'm intrigued :D.
-
nice shootin,, congrats on your bow,,
-
DC, it's not backed. It's some of the densest osage I've ever seen.
-
Fastest selfbow I've ever seen ;D

Fastest selfbow I've ever seen ;D
I'm pretty sure Badger hit 207 on one of his bows. Other than that, I dont think i have seen a faster bow at 10gpp at 28".
-
Extremely good numbers! Did the bow take 1/2" set from it's starting profile before tillering? If so I can see where that could put the bow into the mid 180's. Typically I would expect to see maybe mid 170's from that profile. Have you perfected a snap shooting technique?
-
Real good numbers!!!! That profile with 1/2” set should be fast in my opinion. What’s the mass weight? Was the set at fade to mid-limb?
Love to see the caul! Arvin
-
great numbers...you sure got the attention of the speed and distance gurus... :) congrats! :OK
-
Extremely impressive for a bow of that limb profile. Nicely done!!
-
Can we get a force draw chart?
-
Fellas I just got home from work. I'm tired and sick to boot. I will record the numbers per inch of draw this weekend and post asap.
Badger, I try to snap shoot but, judging from the speed I think its consistent high 180s. This bow took that set in the recurves. It was naturally deflected as it was the top side of a tree growing along the ground. I put a gentle swooping reflex from six inches out of the fades to the working recurves. Everything works and I'm sure I'm maxing out the stretching capabilities of the wood without overstrain. I cannot deny the possibility of a fluke reading on the 197 but the 187 and 188 numbers are common
-
Good example of the importance of controlling set! I have had several with that profile in the mid and low 180's so high 180's is not unreasonable.
-
Selfbowman, I dont have a caul. I dont use a tillering tree. My ancestors had no such thing. I try to reduce side profile first then adjust thickness before I ever bend the bow. I firmly believe that you can "feel" a bow resist the bend right before taking set. This just happened to work out phenomenally. I have a sinew bow that shoots 9.6 gpp arrows in the 180s but this particular bow is just a freak of nature.
-
You still had to do your part :D
-
Well done on the build. Arvin

Thanks everyone. I cant thank most all of you here enough. You may not realize it, but, I have been reading your comments and preferences for many years now. Badger you sir, have been nothing short of exceptional in your manner and wealth of knowledge you give so freely. Basically, you, sir. Have been my mentor more than you may know. I am but a lowly stickbender in a land of giants. I may never make another bow this fast again. But I would never had made this one without the fantastic artists like badger. Thank you all for the help!!!
-
That is fast. Well done

I have no clue what this stuff means. Lol. I just try to make bows with little to no set with a decent early weight and shave off as much fat as is possible. These numbers may or may not be ideal idk. If someone could chart this and post it I would greatly appreciate it!
-
I'll do that in the morning. Have you had it shoot in the 190's again?
-
Third shot! First was 187, second was 188.
-
How are you ensuring that you aren't overdrawing the bow?
-
My arrows are 29 inches long from nock groove to the start of the field point. They have outserts so I draw them back until the outsert touches my finger and I release. No real guarantee but the decent consistency in speed should suggest that I'm staying close to right. Right?
-
What is an outsert?
-
It's a threaded adapter that slides over the arrow to allow screw in broadheads
-
Is it shiny? Can you post a picture of it? I'll get busy on you FDC
-
Three rivers archery sells them. They're called woodscrew adapters
-
Here's your FDC. I just guessed at the 6" brace height. It's linear which I kind of expected from the shape of the bow.

Those are slick, I like them.
Anyway everything I've read about chronos says the tip off the arrow should be painted flat black. I've never had a problem with it but a shiny thing like that may be a problem. Squirt a little black paint on it. It will be better for hunting that way too.
-
Chronos are extremely sensitive to light
-
DC are you suggesting that those shiny tips would give inaccurate yet consistent results? This bow has 3 inches of reflex heat treated into it. It doesnt show it but it was shaped like a braced bow as a stave. Lol I bent it with a heat gun over a chair by adding gently pressure and adjusting the fulcrum while treating the belly. What does the linear chart mean/suggest? Is this good, bad, great, terrible, phenominal?
-
getting consistant numbers indicates consistancy,,when I test,, I know I not gonna pull it perfect without someone to spot for me,, but Im ok with that,,
if I getting consistant numbers I know Im pretty close,, give or take,, I would have to send to DC to shoot on the machine to be exact,, :)

I don't know too either question. I've never had a problem with shiny tips but all the writeups mention it. A quick squirt of paint would eliminate it as a problem.
I really don't know all the in's and out's of FDC's. A straight line like that is normal for a straight bow I think. Recurves usually have a convex curve
That's about all I know. If you find out anything more, let me know :D
-
Thanks fellas! All I know right now is that I've made two bows in my life that buried the fletchings. Most of my bows end up in the 160-170 fps range. I knew on the first shot that this one was definitely above average.
-
Congratulations on your bow. Great numbers :) Well done :)
