Title: Osage deflexed recurve (+pics)
Post by: BoltBows on July 28, 2020, 05:51:50 am
Hi everybody, Have you ever had some waste material that unexpectedly turned out to be pretty useable? Well perhaps they are the best of bows because you didn't have any expectations!
The other day I got two pieces of osage about 34'' long and about 1'' thick max. Both were split off staves and initially regarded as waste. However the splitting went well and I decided to glue the pieces together and go for a deflexed design. To thicken the handle area there were slats of scrap osage glued on the back and belly. To cover all of these gluelines up I went for several layers of a dark stain made purely out of osage shavings and ammonia. The bow is heat treated and the recurves where boiled for bending.
Cheers for reading, here are some stats:

NTN:                      62''
DW:                      38# @ 28''
max. width:           38mm
String:                   8 strands D97
Finish:                   Tung oil
Nocks:                   Hawthorn

That is beautiful. It's fun making bows out of scraps isn't it?

Thanks everyone for the kind words!!

@Hedgehunter: Only foam targets, bowhunting is illegal here in the Netherlands. ;)

@DC: Sure is! Leon Loef (Leonwood) is a master at it and inspired me haha. I’m sure you’ve seen his work here!

@Sleek: xD cheers!

Very nicely done BoltBows
Yes leonwood has been a inspiration to many along with Simson who inspired him. I can see a little of both of them in that bow. Along with your own personal touch. Nice to see.
Thanks for sharing. Hope to see more in the near future

Your bow gives me some inspiration for using some of the extra pieces laying around rather than using them for fire wood.  I would have loved to see a close up view of the handle area.  Great job.
