Title: Muzzle loaders and rifles
Post by: ahtilathehun on August 23, 2020, 07:53:51 am
I have been a fan of PA for as long as my kids have been with me, which is about 23 years. I always enjoy the articles that are presented in this great magazine.
But I don’t want to read articles about anything gun related. There are other magazines and forums on the subject. There is nothing primitive about a rifle. Are we going to see articles about compound bows?  I certainly hope not. Primitive Archer is the name of the magazine. Not that I am against gun hunting of any kind, but if I want to read articles on that subject I wouldn’t buy Primitive Archer.

That seems to be a common sentiment.  What do you think about other traditional/primitive crafts? The two recent articles about cane quivers and wool dying/weaving where quite good in my opinion, and back issues have everything from birch-bark canoes to wood burned bowls.

I certainly understand your position, I was once a traditional bow hunt only guy but the freezer came up empty at times. In archery have been strictly a selfbow guy since 96 although I do like my flintlocks.

I have found that the majority of the B/P  Buckskinners are selfbow guys as well at one level or another. A lot of selfbow guys dabble in traditional B/P firearms also so the two can coexist.

I am with you about bought off the shelf cap lock B/P rifles, there is nothing primitive about them.

In my case I build all my rifles and fowlers, all flintlocks, in the B/P world they are definitely primitive. I have spent up to two years on a build starting with a block of wood, a barrel, lock and pile of rough castings from a foundry.

I pretty much carry the M/L section here with build a-longs, Mike Yancy has added some good input as well. In my old age I am more into the crafting part than the shooting part but I do hunt with what I build be it selfbows or flintlocks.

Check this out and see if this looks Hi-tech to you. I just checked the thread and found that half the pictures of the build have disappeared, I didn't us photo bucket so I don't know where they went.
