Title: Osage Knot Oopsy
Post by: Fox on October 18, 2020, 07:43:17 pm
I was going to make this a unbacked slightly bend in the handle 58" - 60" long,  1.5" wide at fades, straight taper to 1/2" tips, 50 at 27".... not sure if that is proper design or not. but the problem is I accidentally cut to close to this knot. its right in the fade. advice?

Finish your rough out and get everything neat, tapers roughed in and then you will be able to tell.

It’s pretty close to ruffed out...

If all of the wood left around the knot in that first photo is solid/unviolated, I think you left enough.  If you dinged it up somehow, a closer-up photo would help.

Close up coming up... no violation on the back of the bow.. I just didn’t think I left enough around the knot...  I dunno though

I think it's OK. It's not gold, just finish the bow and see if it works.

okay jim.... would wraping that spot with linen or sinew or something like that help? this is my first and only real osage stave so id really like to get a bow out of it... it doesn't have to be the bow I first described just any shooter.

That doesn't look bad at all - just carefully clean it up, and as others said, keep it from bending too much.  Don't use a draw knife anymore at this point around the knot, as it's very easy to snag and tear grain.
