Title: Cleaning Grouse
Post by: Yooper Bowyer on November 18, 2020, 11:08:41 am
A grouse just crashed into a window, how soon after death does it need to be cleaned to be edible? just wondering.

Good question, I have always gutted them immediately after the shooting. I use the 'step on the wings and pull the legs' method, takes just a few seconds and does a decent job of getting everything cleaned out on one fell swoop.

It waited a bit, but it was still warm when the breast meat was pulled off, so it must be fine.

My brother will use the body feathers for flys and the tail will make a good mount.  Not sure about the wings yet.  The rest of the bird is an anatomy lesson in and of itself.  The crop was loaded with buds and ferns, who knew?

So how do you prepare a tail mount?  I've read somewhere in PA about turkey mounts, but I can't find the article.

Just be sure the bird dog doesn't get it first!  Not sure about how to prep it though! (lol) :fp
