Title: Just a stick
Post by: Morgan on November 19, 2020, 03:47:37 pm
D bow from a 2” diameter American elm sapling. 62” tip to tip 52# @ 28”. Around 1 1/4” wide most of the limb tapering last 10” or so to 5/8” @ nocks. Pretty wonky piece of wood for me. Has some natural deflex, reflex and twist that messed with my eyes tillering it. I didn’t want to do any corrections to this stick, just wanted to leave it as is. Wax finish. Just a stick, but it’ll send an arrow with some thump. Zero handshock. Tiller probably leaves some to be desired but good as I am capable of on this stave, and gizmo says it’s ok. Holding low on full draw pic, just picked it up and drew it.

That looks great I love simple stick bows. Wish I had American Elm, all I can find in my area is red elm.

Nice looking stick. Simple, effective, and good looking. What more could you ask for.

Thanks guys. Only elm I’ve used has been small diameter American elm and I like the stuff a lot. I won’t fool with it if it’s over 4” diameter inside the bark cause it’s a bear to split, but the small stuff breaks apart ok. I feel like it’s just about as foolproof as hickory.

Nice bow, that's one of my favorite styles.  I wish I had more elm here, it's pretty scarce.  I love the way heat tempering brings out the grain on elm.  What do you use for a string?

That's my kinda stick, simple lines have an appeal all their own. Well done.

What do you use for a string?

I shot it in using a long b50 tillering string, I think that one will have a gut or  rawhide string on it when it goes to the woods though, seems fitting.

Way to go on that elm stick Morgan! A bit stiff in handle and diamond nocks, very nice.

Great bow. I love this style. It takes so much stress out of building when you just use the wood the way it is (especially if the stave is nice to begin with). Great job!

"Just a Stick" with a fine tiller and perfect form. To me, that really is the benchmark of Primitive Archer. I'd bet that puts the arrow right where you want it.
