Title: Trade bow from Sleek (Axe handle bow)
Post by: Swampman on November 21, 2020, 08:45:49 pm
I received this bow from Sleek in the 2020 Bow Trade.  It is made from a hickory axe handle that Sleek cut down the middle and then spliced together. It has Osage glued on the handle area to build it up and it also has Osage tip overlays. The bow is 60 inches tip to tip and pulls 45 pounds at 26 inches. This is a very fast bow and spits an arrow out like it is a much heavier draw weight bow.

Sleek really makes a great shooting bow. I am very proud to be the owner of this very unique bow. I have been able to finally shoot a bunch of arrows through this bow the last few days and I really love shooting it. The handle is very comfortable and the bow is very light in the hand.

that turned out as a favorable and unique trade for you! I like the idea and the execution by sleek. Truper bows seem nicely and fast tillered indeed  ;D

Glad its shooting well for you. I want to add, thats two ace handles spliced, not one ripped in half. A single axe handle cut in half will make a 30 pounder, but not enough thickness for 45. Feel free to play around with a heat gun on that to remove some set if you like, its really humid where I'm at so it was unavoidable unfortunately. The finish is Tru oil if you decide to mess with it any.

I don't think I want to change anything on this bow.  It is very fast as is and I have always felt a bow with a little set makes for a smooth shooting bow.  I love the bow as is and wouldn't change a thing.

Looks like a really nice use of two axe handles. Shows that you don’t need to be surrounded by Osage to be able to make a good selfbow.

Nice work Sleek.

Thanks for sharing Swampman

Very nice indeed.  I don't know about using more heat on it though, you might have to re-tiller
