Title: European Yew Flatbow
Post by: dreamcraft_archery on December 02, 2020, 10:16:21 am
Hi guys!

I finished another bow. This time it's something special. I got my hands on crazy piece of European Yew. It had many checked sapwood spots, there were some going even to heartwood. But I managed to find a bow inside. Wood owner claimed it was seasoned for 3 years, but I gave it a bit more time in my shed.
The bow is 64" overall long, drawing 50-55lbs at 26". It took nearly no set. There is mostly one growth ring on the back except handle section. (surface was concave so I left a few more there) Tips overlays are from Bog Oak. I named it "Leszy" - as a slavic demon of forests. Bow shoots really fast and smooth. I love it's character with all the bumps and knots.

If you like the bow check out my video from building it:

All the best guys!
Stay safe!

Gorgeous, I love 'em like that, lots of character waggles :).
Del
(PS Personally I'd have padded under the grip at the back as it is almost concave and those corners can sometimes be uncomfortable.)

Saw your progress on reddit and instagram and it looks really nice!!
Just one simple question, what kind of leather did u use for the handle? and what kind of leather could be used best for a arrow rest?

Thank you for all your comments guys, I really appreciate each one. I'm very proud of this bow, I was dreaming to have such 3 years ago before I started making them.
Chappie - I use tanned cow leather. Sometimes decorated. I have some leftovers from my friend and I use them on my bows. I'm not sure what kind of leather would be better - I don't have any experience with others.

Not a criticism, just a suggestion. (Hope you don't mind, you obviously have the necessary skill)
There are some tiny tweaks you could do to improve the leather work.
Shaving the edge of the leather and folding it over and gluing it along the top an bottom edges can look really smart.
Also keeping to the same over under rhythm with the stitching and working out a tidy way to finish off makes a difference... it's a pain at first and I've had to re-do the stitching more than once but it's worth the trouble.
This post shows what I mean:-

Thank you Del, I see what you mean and really appreciate your suggestion. It's a tiny thing but as you said it makes a difference.
After uploading pictures I realised I messed up a bit stitching. I will work on it!

Fantastic bow, great job!
This is an extraordinary piece of yew, love the character.
And yes, this bow is it worth to replace the stiching. Maybe glue on rawhide on the inside of the beaver to prevent break outs.
