ok the bow is 60 inches long
its pulling 55#@ 25
it will shoot a hunting weight arrow 170fps with a b55 string,,
its hickory with thin layer of sinew,, and holds just a bit of reflex,,
I will put a handle on it and take more pics full draw etc,, the sinew is painted with acrylic and I will spray a protective layer of poly over that,, it will hunt in the rain,,
I am not givinig the weight of the arrow,, who ever guesses closest to the weight can have the bow,,
I will pay shipping,,
I will post winner sat at 12 my time,,
the bow could easy be tillerd to longer draw,,with the sinew backing I would say 28 ,, it might go more,, you could pull it to 26 or 27 without tiller if the weight was ok for you,,
I think post the weight you guess here,, unless someone has a better idea,,
just to be clear you are guessing the weight of arrow that shot the 170 fps,, ;D

505 grains

450 grains

440 grains.
-
this exciting,, :)
-
475 grains.... cool idea bradsmith :D... nice lookin bow! what’s your thoughts on the sinew hickory combo? I’ve got some sinew all ready for a bow, but not bow to put it on!
-
I havent worked with hickory in a long time, ,it seems to work very nice with sinew,,
I would have put more reflex in if I had to do it over, but it shoots nice,, it worked a little different than osage,, I guess if I tillered it out further it would be more telling,, and Im in a dry climate,, so hickory likes that,, I read that Jay Massey liked hickory sinew,, overall Im pleased,, I think its a nice combo,,, Ill post some full draw tomorrow,, and handle,, the stave looked so straight, but ended up having some nice character,, it was a little challenging for me to tiller, Im getting older and slower,, or more picky,, I dont know,, :NN
-
Probly invincible too ;D
-
I think it would go to 30 inch draw, but Im got lazy,,and when it started shooting good I just stopped, figured it would suite someone, or could be tillered out,,further,,
-
Definitely wanna see some FD picks.... your probly just getting pickier ;)
-
445 grains. character bow for sure! gotta love em!
-
500 grains. Camo job looks really cool. Looking forward to a FD pic.
-
468 grains.
-
Really nice hickory bow Brad. Congrads. Generous of you also. Would love to have one of your bows . 520 grs.
-
480 grains
-
I'm excited to see full draw pics too! I love the paint job. I bet being picky leads to a stellar tiller. I'm guessing 477 grains
-
Also can’t wait to see full draw. I’ll venture a guess of 484gr
-
Cool bow Brad and a very nice gesture offing it to a member. :OK
-
Nice looking bow! I’m gonna guess it was shot with a 483 grain arrow
-
Very good looking bow Brad. The paint job is "unique"! I am going with 452

very cool...525g

Cool bow! 480 grains

Welcome aboard Monkeyball! What lead you here?

full draw 25 inches

Very nice!
I'm dyeing to know what the answer is!
I reconsidered and modified my guess.
hope it's right
-
the bow had a bit of back set ,, you can see it still holds a bit of that,, and the overall shape is a slight gull wing,, graceful I think,, I wish I had enough bows for everyone,,
I will try to do it again in the future,, really appreciate the positive response,,, I am looking forward to seeing pics with the new owner,, and hopefully a dead deer too sometime,, :D
I forgot to take a braced photo but will do that,,
-
I'm suspenced out!
I changed it last time, I promise, but this is a more educated guess.
-
Awesome bow brad. I love the camouflage paint job. 495gr.

dry run on handle,, I think it looks nice with the hickory
-
Very nice,
I really like the look of hickory, I just wish I had more to work with :(
I have HHB and ash to keep me busy though :)
-
It is very nice looking. I like the braced profile too

Honestly I feel like I can calculate this, but that would be cheating. Id only need to know two things. The brace, and how much draw it has at the first inch of draw.
-
you guys are so close,, I dont think I can give any clues,, its scary,, ;D plus you have to factor in some variation with my release,, etc,, :NN
-
Sleek, you also may want the efficiency of the bow?
-
I can guess pretty well, probably 85%
-
I wish mine were that good ;D
-
I dont know how to measure that,, is there an easy way for a non math guy,,
-
Calculate the energy stored in the bow, and compare it to the full draw weight of the bow as a percentage.
-
Standard efficiency = energy out divided by energy in. The energy in is what you are storing in the limbs; it is equal to the area under the FD curve, though you probably already knew that :D
-
I don't understand what y'all just said but now I'm gonna research it :)
-
I will go with 490. I would say 480, but it's been taken already (twice in fact)! Whoever ends up with this bow will be super happy - thanks Brad!
-
im gonna post the winner since no more guesses,,
-
I mean I'll make more guesses to cover more ground : )
-
tradcraftsman, guessed on the money,,468,,,
pm me with mailing address and and phone and email so I can send tracking updates,,
I still need to shoot the bow a couple of days to see what limb is up,, and spray couple more coats of finish and make a string,,, but will give you heads up when it goes out,,
congratulations,, and thank you everyone for your positive support,, I will do it again in the future,, it was really fun,, :)
-
I'm gonna cry! Just saw this thread, but my guess would have been a bit higher than Trad anyway! Nice job! Congrats Tradcraftsman!
Hawkdancer
-
Congrats tradecraft! You're gonna be thrilled with that bow I guarantee it :OK
-
Congrats tradcraftsman. It's a really nice bow. I'm lucky to live in Santa Fe. Brad helped me get started making primitive bows. He is very generous and he makes great bows. I learn something from him everyday. Enjoy the bow..
-
Thank you so much!!! I have no idea how to say it better. ;D
This will be the first functional wooden bow I've ever seen that I didn't make, and easily the best I've ever shot! :)
-

A perfect guy to win then!
-
Tell us how she sends those magical pointy sticks downrange ! ;D :OK
-
Congratulations Tradcraftsman. Brad, Thank You for your generosity to all us trad junkies. I have learned a lot from reading your posts and always hope you chime in with your thoughts on mine when I post. You are a great inspiration and a very generous contributor to the art of making selfbows.
-
Congratulations Tradcraftsman and thank you for the chance.
Good Shooting->->->->Craig
-
Congratulations Tradcraftsman! Make sure you post some pics when you receive it. Thanks Brad for your generosity. I was just telling Pat B what a great site this is and how generous the more experienced bowyers are about sharing their knowledge let alone giving bows away.
-
Thank You for your generosity to all us trad junkies.
+3
I will defiantly post photos ;D
-
I just received the bow, I will take it to the range and post photos on the next warm sunny day.
I love the design and the look. The belly looks every bit what I pictured a hickory bow to be, and the back will blend very nicely with our birches and aspens.
Thank you so much again!
P.s. As a bowyer, I find the unbraced profile enviable. I hope I will be able to pull off that kind of work consistently some day :)
-
glad it got there safe,, enjoy your shooting,, :)
-
That is such an awesome thing
-
I really want to bring down game with it, maybe this will finally push me into getting a license :)
First I need to go through hunter safety ('for the safety of all' it is now an online course :o).
I also need to find the time to get back in practice so I could make use of a license, not to be mention learning how to get close to animals. Rabbit season runs for another month or two, but after that I think the only game before fall is turkey, not what I want to start on :-\
There are always those bush tailed, nut headed, foul mouthed little red devils running through the woods though >:D
I guess I'm a total rooky at this hunting business, though I did bag a stump once (lol)
-
Very nice work Brad. :)
Pappy
-
thank you Pappy,, :)
-
not sure where you are located but hickory and sinew go together like peas and baked beans here.. hickory is already almost indestructible and the sinew just ads moisture to the hickory bows here... looks like you must be in a drier climate.. or hot boxed it for months..haha... gut
-
Maine summers can be brutally humid, but the winters are equally dry. I have not had to much trouble from either, but I monitor set closely if I ever have worries.
-
Gut, im pretty sure, those bows up where you at, werent painted with my seceret formula moisture resisting camo,,gauranteed to hold up bettern baked beans,, )P(
-
I need your receipe for that paint Brad! Maybe you should market it. Lol
-
Im gonna make a video and be a millionare on utube,,ha ha,, :)
I did put four layers of moisture protection on the sinew,,I used to hunt in texas hot and humid and rain,,
this is what I do,1 first I spray a layer of poly on the sinew,, cause I dont want the acrylic paint moisture to get in
2 then I paint it with heavy gel medium,,thats clear,,liguitex makes it, its bout 15 dollars for 8 0z( worth it,)
3 then I paint it with the colors I wants 4 then I spray over that with poly couple 3 times,,,,, so its about four layers of protection,,,, I make sure I paint the edges real good,,where the sinew meets the edge wood,,
on this bow I sprayed the belly real good with poly, on my hunting bows, I paint the belly too,,I have heard that the heat treating on hickory makes it better for restisting moisture, I heat treated this bow as well,,so it should be fine for a winter hunting bow,,
heck when I bow hunted in Texas it would be 90 sometimes and raining,, talk about humid and the skeeters would eat you up,,I still killed deer even spraying off on me,, if I had the wind,,
that reminded me, Jay Massey,, one of the most respected archers of our time,,liked hickory and sinew, and he hunted in pretty harsh conditions in Alaska, if he liked it,, its gotta be a pretty good combo,,,, his book was one of the first books I ever read on archery,, its still a good read,, has a nice chapter on making sinew bows and arrows,,
-
I use just a satin varathan after bow is complete and it doesn't pick up any moisture , she will be good to go as any other wood after sealed.. the issue we have down south is when bow is being completed... we have to bring in conditioned air after every time its worked.. doing that seems to cure any issues with the hickory soaking up any moisture from outside.. it is like a sponge... haha.. but I love the wood.. abundant here ... sweet bow brother...
-
There was finally decent light for photos today, I will post more when I get my first squirrel :)
Thank you again, ;D
P.s. The handle fits wonderfully.
-
nice photos enjoy,, :)
