Title: Osage static with brush nocks
Post by: Stixnstones on June 26, 2021, 09:53:17 pm
So, this bow is 66" ntn #53 @ 27". I started tillering it back in march and set it aside because I knew I wanted to do something out of my comfort zone. I really wanted to try static recurves because those are the only curves I havent tried yet.I steamed the curves in than Pearly told me to do brush nocks, and I thought yeah right. Well I grabbed a couple blocks of walnut and went to work. With my anxiety at an all time high I crept my way through every part of this build. The tip overlays are buffalo horn and I laminated an extra piece of osage to the handle and to my suprise it had those cool beatle holes in it, thanx beatles. Those are the last set of snakeskins I had and they absolutely had to go on this bow. And again thats leather off my old Brooks leather jacket from my punk rock days. Hope y'all like it as much as I do, it's a rocket launcher. Thank you Mr Grumley for your inspiration and thanx Pearly for puttin the bug in my butt to do this bow

Every once in awhile someone posts a bow that is just truly inspiring. What a stunning example of what a bow can be.

The side profile and full draw profile speak volumes to your ability to read the wood. What with those whooptie-doops in the one limb, I am impressed with just how fine a job you did with profile. This is a show piece AND a work horse.

That's a beautiful bow.  You were pretty lucky to find a snake skin with a bend in just the right place... ;D

I love it.  If you was a little shorter you could flip that baby up side down - reposition the handle and you'd have a centershot bow give er take.   :D

Ok...I'm inspired and that bow is awesome.  So, recurves are supposed to be a bit louder than longbows if both are built similarly well, and I'm assuming that this is because of the sling slap on the belly?  If I'm wrong there, someone correct me.  So with these brush nocks, can you tell a difference in quietness of bow?  It seems these would give the benefits of a recurve while eliminating the supposed increased noise at the shot.  I really want to give these a try, because they look incredible and getting brush hung up between my string and bow drives me freaking nuts...and they look incredible.  I haven't tried it yet because I don't know If I could pull it off, as my craftsmanship isn't that developed, and I have not wanted to add the extra tip mass on a hunting bow...which is what all of my few builds have been.  If these result in a quieter bow when fired, I'll trade the speed loss for the decreased noise.

These are the first brush nocks I've ever done, but can tell you this bow doesnt make a peep. And as for speed, it's fast as all get out. I will definetly do them again now that I've learned a lil more about them. Can be frustrating at first but go slow, you'll get it

Fine job.  Next time you build some, do a build along, because I don’t have the first freaking clue about where to start, and I doubt I’m alone on that.  Again…beautiful work!
