While waiting for bows I'm making to rehydrate from heat treating I went ahead and took these 2 brained deer hides out from the freezer and roped them soft and then smoked them at the same time.It was a nice day to rope them dry.Took about 2 to 3 hours per hide putting them into a plastic bag in between while taking breaks.
Smoking was done at about 1 hour per side.I use hickory bark for smoking.Smells great afterwards and gives it a nice color too.

They'll be good to use this winter making some possible bags.

Thanks fellas.Smoked brain tan is some nice stuff.
I'm in the process of sewing together a another war shirt.I've got some beadwork to put on it later. It looks like they'll be 8 seams to sew up.Got some fringe to add in the seams also.I'll sew them up by hand using a lock whip stitch every 1/16" with 1/4 width artificial sinew and a small curved suture/glovers needle.

Nice. I've tanned some hides but never really had time to do it right. Starting this fall I want to do more of it. Thanks for all your post!

Thanks fellas....Hunting season is just around the corner.Time to get a couple more.
I have a self tanned badger hide that I'll turn into a nice belt pouch later this winter using some of these deer hides shown.
I call them christmas badgers because they really don't get prime till around christmas or there after. In the center of their back is the last place for their fur to get prime.

Not my best beadwork but I'll live with it.Small #12 seed beads applied.Siouw lazy stitched.Applied his claws yet too.No need for a tie down if the flap is long enough and with the weight of the glass and claws it stays shut good.

Cool stuff, Ed. Especially the badgers, of course. (https://www.techlicious.com/images/computers/privacy-badger-app-cartoon-100px.jpg)
