Title: Red oak log - Too old or still usable
Post by: Tim P on November 19, 2021, 11:21:35 am
About 4 months ago, a storm broke of a branch from a tree and unfortunately I didn't have time until today to get a closer look at it.

It's in my driveway now, but I am not sure if it is still usable. There are some brown patches (I think its some kind of rot/fungus, but I'm not sure)
The log was leaning against another tree, so free from the ground and there were sill some grey leaves attached.

In the top of the image, you can see the nice red inner bark and on the bottom part is it brownish/grey

Some of the brown goes deep into the wood

Right upper side of the wood

So... worth starting to get the bark of and dry it or use it as firewood and keep looking for a better log?

It will make great firewood or good lumber but not bows now. If it laid on the ground for 2 weeks or more it probably not good for bows anymore.
