Title: Grouse love corn
Post by: Marc St Louis on January 26, 2022, 02:00:52 pm
I've had a few Grouse hanging around and put out some corn for them, they just love it  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpZ9Vu2LeNs

Unfortunately some Deer came by and found it and have now claimed ownership so now the Grouse have to wait their turn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIFcjJ-p1og

Excellent video Marc.
It always amazes me how tough these birds are in the colder conditions. What do they normally live off of?Your deer look in fine shape.
All prey type animals or birds here love corn too.
I like feeding and watching the song birds here with black sunflower seed.Same thing happens here too that the deer and turkey move in occasionally.Never seen any pheasant or quail move in yet.The pheasant and quail here live off of spillage out in the corn a soybean fields from harvesting.Gravel roads here give them access for grit to digest the seeds.
The problem comes when the snow gets too deep for them and the temperatures get bitterly cold. Then the predators have a better life.
Every winter is'nt the same here but usually I find myself using well over 400 pounds of sun flower seed every winter.

Takes more kernels when the temperature stays down between 0 F and high of 10 F.

Pheasants love maize too. Here in Wiltshire, southern England, the local estate sows belts of maize, maybe 20 yards wide and leaves it standing. Pheasants like the cover and the grain that drops to the ground and it encourages them to stay local. Then the beaters know where to find the pheasants when there is a driven shoot. They will cut it down after the pheasant season ends on 31 January.

During stressful conditions is when I like to feed the birds and animals.Whether that be in the dead of winter time or even in drought.
Corn has about the highest BTU conversion for heat for the wildlife.
Birds seem to show the resulting stress quicker than animals by the population differences from year to year.
A lot of research by the DNR goes into the type of cover for birds to lessen the stress of the conditions also for such birds as quail and pheasants.
