Title: pine pitch fail :-)
Post by: paulc on March 25, 2022, 01:58:20 pm
What a recent warm spell did to my pine pitch.  It was nearly 80F where it was sitting, in direct sun in my defense but it would seem it needs some work.

Do I just cook it some more or should I add some more ash or poop?  It has very little added so far.

Thanks, Paul

Paul, is it hard, brittle? More roughage will add body to it.

Yes to both...let the poop hunt begin. I don't have easy access to rabbit or deer here in town...

Finely ground hardwood charcoal works as does fine saw dust.

I test a little sample after i make it, if it is to brittle I add a little more bees wax paraffin or deer talon , if it is to sticky I add finely ground charcoal or hard wood ash. I usually make a lot at a time and test a small amount as i mix it in the pot until I get it like i want. I test it on a piece of paper dripped on a little , if it bends and don't break and not sticky after it cools it is usually good. No real recipe just mix until it is what I want. ;)

Thanks everyone! One of these days I'll get around to redoing my pitch.
