Title: Yew - Longbow - 66" ntn - 53# @ 28" - "Infinite"
Post by: simk on June 12, 2022, 12:19:00 pm
Hi Bowmakers

I made this bow from a super straight yew shoot. It was around 2 1/2" in diameter and probably one of the best pieces of yew I've worked; rings towards the outer side are so tight,....you can't even count them under the loupe - thats why I named it Infinite. It really was a pleasure to work, also because the first ring under the bark could be used as the back. It took almost no set and I didn't make any heat corrections on the profile.
what you also see is my new bowyers mark - its handmade by a famous local craftsman - I lately showed him my bows and asked him weather he could make some tiny traditional motivs for my bows - he agreed - I'm super happy!

I love you yew  ;D

Cheers and thanx everybody for posting their nice bows!

love it... thanks for sharing.  So many of us use heat to adjust and change things that it is nice to see a more "natural" bow.

Beautiful bow Simon!  The sapwood/heartwood contact on these yew bows is really stunning. I love the tip overlays and the bend on this one. I’m curious about that knot on the side of the upper limb. Any concern about that causing problems?

Thanx Bob! I have no ethical problems with heat corrections. This was just one of the rare bows that didnt ask for any 😁
Thanx Will B! You have a well trained eye! These inclined knots always are critical on low dia staves. I was worried a little about this one in the build also. Now I think it survives...maybe fill the little crack with superglue and see what time will bring 🤞

Excellent work on that stick.I always like the natural look.
I've always known yew will hold up very well in damp or high humidty environments. In very dry low humidity conditions I wonder if it is the same?

Very nice bow Simon ! Can imagine that sapling was a dream to work with. I guess you chopped that one out quick like your laminates! The dog looks cool too!
Greets to Swiss!

That sure is a sweet stick.

I hope that knot holds to. Is a little scary direction it’s headed.

Very nice full draw

Gorgeous bow.  Question.  Have you filled in the knot yet or still waiting to see what it does?

thanx everybody!

BowEd: I live in a moderate climate - due to my lack of e climate chamber I cannot really judge the properties of yew in very dry or wet climate. I also heard it tolerates moisture well and can say from own experience that it starts denting and the risk of failure raises when its overdried. That maybe the cause for your personal experience with yew, saying it dents when you look at it  ;D Indeed it may be not the very best choice in a very dry climate.....but proper mc yew does not dent at all - its rather like cutting bacon.

Yes, B2W, this was a rather quick build - with clean an straight wood a simple bow can be made in a few hours  ;)

And no Superdav, I haven't filled the check with superglue yet. I think this particular piece is of extremly good quality that it can deal with this knot in there without failing. Anyways,....I'm not sure if it would benefint at all from superglueing that little crack...

Cheers everybody!
