Title: Black locust for shoot shafts?
Post by: Mesophilic on September 13, 2022, 10:01:23 am
We have alot of black locust shoot growing in some burn scar.  Many are pretty straight and not too snakey.

Does BL make a good shoot shaft?

Black locust could make a good shoot arrow but the locust around hear would be too big for arrows after the second growth year which is the best time to harvest shoot shafts.

Thanks, if I run across some that look like good candidates,  I'll go ahead and cut them to check the growth rings.

You don't have to check growth rings, If the shoot only has leaves it is 1st year growth. If it has small branches it is at least 2nd year growth. Locust has compound leaves so don't mix them up for small branches.
