Title: Red Elm for Phil
Post by: Stickhead on February 04, 2023, 10:32:29 pm
Hi, Y’all,

I haven’t posted one in a long time, so here goes. This is a Red Elm wavey pyramid self bow for my friend, Phil.  He’s a novice with long arms, so I made it 45#@30”.  (My full draw pic is stretching as far as I can, maybe 28”.). It’s plenty long, at 70”, 1-7/8” wide at fades, down to 3/8” tips.  I followed the wavey grain on this one, but the jury’s still out on whether it’s all that necessary for this wood.  Had a helluva time getting it to line up, but eventually managed it.  I heat-treated it and flipped the tips some.  Dressed it up with a dye job, ebony tips, suede wrap, and a bit of purpleheart for the arrow pass.

(Phil owns and brews at a local microbrewery, so I’m hoping for a nice barter.)

I’m thinking that should be worth a couple rounds.

Nice bend.

Thanks a lot for the kind words, guys.  It means a lot coming from this bunch!

It’s always a bit awkward for me, making bows for these long-armed gorillas.  I got frustrated with this bow and it sat in my shop for 6 months before I finally saw the potential in it.

Very nice stick. Good looking tiller on that character bow. Hope you make a good trade with your buddy. I think red elm is an good overlooked bow wood, at least in my area. Just cant prove it yet. Heading to a wood lot this week to try and find a few small trees of it. Mike

I’ve been messing with red elm a lot lately, since I harvested a big fallen tree last year.  It likes heat treatment, and bends pretty well with dry heat.  I’m starting to like it a lot.

I've never used it. Some FG bowyers do sandwiched between fiberglass.
