This is a Eucalyptus bow I just finished.
67 1/2" ntn, 57 # @ 27", assymetrical limbs with 3/16" positive, the Guava overlays look more like Osage ;D, finished the bow with a homemade finish that I just mixed a few days ago, the handle and the wraps are cotton.
I was very nervous tillering this bow for the fear of it exploding, but it tuned out to be a very good one, took very little set and the string is really tigth at brace.
I'll be cutting more of this wood ;D ;D

...sorry for chopping the tip on the full draw, but I was dealing with a selftimer, and I cursed enought >:( >:( ;D
-
Wow! You make great bows :) that eucalyptus looks like pretty wood and i love those overlays
-
What did you do, stand up under a ceiling fan! :o ;D ..or just got a summer buzz cut? Nice bow, Manny and the color of the wood is nice also. The guava overlays do look like osage. Pat
-
Sweet bow, great job Manny, no wise cracks about the hair. ::) What kinda tree is that in the background?
-
Sweet bow Manny! It's an absolute beaut (bet it's one sweet shooter too!). And it;s good to see that you haven't lost your talents as a bowyer with your hair :D!
-
Cant hope for better than that with a wood you are unsure of. I love the overlays. I havent seen osage with that beautiful two tone color.
I love the hair cut. Well it might be a little long for my taste. ;D Justin
-
Nice Bow Manny.......great Tiller....as Usual....but whats with the Hair....or Lack of ....as the case is???? I really love the Bow....but that Backdrop is Really Awesome....What is it.....and will they grow in Texas?
-
Thanks guys.
yep this is quite a nice bowood and beautifull to boot.
actually my hair has being like this for almost 6 months now, but I finally got to take picture with the selftimer so I don't have to take them shitty ones from the tree >:D
The tree behind me is a BAYON (Ficus ) if left alone this trees get as big as houses, by dropping roots from the limbs.
-
very nice looking bow, tiller looks real good and the overall shape is real sweet.- Ryan
-
OK, now tell us about this homemade finish you whipped up ??? ;D
-
Hi Manny
Looks like you finally found the correct one out of the 600.
Very nice bow with great tiller for a wiggly stave. Time to try some different designs.
If you are collecting more of the same timber try to get the largest dia you can
as this usually gives the best results.
Graeme

Manny, That looks great, I was hoping it would make it since I still vividly remember how loud that wood is when it explodes :o :D
That is some fine wood still holding that reflex like it does..
Rich
-
thanks guys,
Graeme, I will take a day and go back to where I found this tree to get more for sure, that was the first and last time I ever seen this tipe, ..I'll take pictures
:D :D :D Dano I have a buildalong on PP for that finish, and a fun tiller along of this bow too ;D

Awesome bow, and the ficus tree is a nice background. I saw much smaller ones all over UCLA campus this past Xmas when my wife took me on a tour of her old grad school memories.
Are the wraps above and below the handle area for show only?

Beautiful work as usual Manny. I like the string handle and wraps. Nice variation on handle treatment. Don't look like it takes much of that stuff to make a bow judging from it's size at the arrow pass.
What does asymetrical mean, arrow pass at center or arrow pass 1 1/2" above?
Tiller looks freaking beautiful. And I really can't tell for sure but I'm guessing 1 1/2" above center. That would make the bow symetrical, by the current dogma, but I agree with you it actually is a more accurate description. Not trying to re-kindle that discussion btw. Just curious as I thought we'd talked about it on this very bow, perhaps at another venue.
-
David, I allways thought that symmetrical bows where the ones with limbs of the same length and assymetrical the ones with the longer upper limb (have I being using the wrong term all along ? ::) ;D ), this bow has the handle lyed out, 3" below and 1" above center
Dane, if you look closely the first wrap on the lower limb is over a knot at the very edge of the limb, the secon is at the end of a tiny longitudinal crack, didn't look bad but just in case ;) , uppers are just to match, I thought they looked good, I'm gonna use them more in the future for decoration

I was under the same understanding....a Symmetrical Bow had two Limbs of the Same Length....and An Asymmetrical Bow has a Longer Top and Shorter Bottom...JMO
-
I also thought that was the correct use of the term, a longer limb above the handle.
Thanks for the reply, Manny. Gorgeous bow. Bet she is fun to shoot.

You got it Manny. 1 and 3 would be asym, 1 1/2 and 2 1/2, etc. 2 and 2 would be sym. I simply didn't know yours was 1 and 3. Looks good.
-

I can see where ya'll got the wrong idea, from me! Sorry. Anything but 2" above would be asym. Don't know what I was thinking.
-
terific bow and great pics.
Dave

Classic longbow lines - doesn't get much better than that Manny.
-
thank you for the confidence boost... that is one of a few trees that grow where i am headed at the end of the year...Iraq >:(.. but anyhoo... i hope to have as much success there.... beautiful artwork... the whole bow that is... hope she stays true.
-
Thanks guys, I'm extremely happy with this bow, it was my first truly bendy handle and I learned a lot making it, the bow has an overall over 300 full draws between tree and shooting probably close to 1000 draws at various length between 20 and 27", I think she will be a good hunter :)
-
nice six pack ;D ;D ;D ;D but im not like that :D
-
Hey Manny, I didn't know that you had a new handle, and I sure didn't recognize the haircut, but when I saw the tip treatment I thought, "Hey, this guy copied Manny's tip shape!" Very nice bow my friend!
-
Beautiful bow. If you or Graeme work out what sort of eucalyptus it is, I would love to know, got a few hundred on my land!
-
Hey Bob, long time no hear, how are you doing ?
Thanks I'm really happy how this bow turned out,....Ho yeah I changed the handle, after the second time I got kicked out of TRADGANG, I decided to change to this one, that I had in mind for a while ;D
jape,
I'm going to take a day in the next future to dedicate to go and get more of this wood, the only problem is that's quite a mission being quite a ways into the jungle, but I'll take pictures and Graeme will help with identification, in the mean time brother cut some of them trees and give them a try ;)
-
That is an extremely well tillered bow! You do great work. Jawge
-
Jape.....you anywheres near Walcha, New South Wales ? I got a good mate there named Grahame Bray....he's supposed to be sending me some Aussie Hardwoods.....said they are good Bow woods....cant recall the Name now....but there have been Bows posted here made from it....maybe Manny remembers......
-
That is one great looking primitive weapon. Super full draw shot, too. We'll look at it very seriously for June Self Bow of the Month coming up!
-
Manny, you are an incredible bowyer. ;) I like seeing people take unknow wood and experimenting to see what is possible. And then to be able to produce an unbacked bow with little or no set and profile like that is outstanding. Congratulations. Keenan
-
Thanks Keenan, Don and Gearge

Just a thousand Km away ... bowmakers like Graeme know the aussie eucalypts well, some species are as good as or better than osage or yew but the trouble with them is that one tree varies such a lot from another grown just a few yards away, very dependant on growing conditions. I have made a couple of sapling bows that worked OK (to very basic standards) but I am not good at tillering yet. I have a dozen staves drying slowly and would happily send free staves to people but the costs of posting them internationally are as much or more as the bows themselves, hundreds of dollars each, seriously.
-
Just looking through this one again. man that turned out nice! i love the tips! hope she makes some meat for you real soon.
Phil
-
Thanks Phil,
Don't think I'll take this one (or any the bows I've being making lately ) hunting any time soon, they are way to lite for what I like to shoot nowadays, I'm getting an all bunch of bows ready for when I get old :D :D
waiting for Thimo's 90 #er to get here, and hunt with it ;D
-
Beautiful bow Manny, very nice tiller and finish work ,as usually. :)
Pappy

almost missed thisone: really nice bow!
frank

i understand Manny, only on a much smaller scale. i was hunting with a 45 pound recurve for the longest time. then i started making 55-60lb bows, and i know the 45 pounder will do the job and all, but i just have more confidence with the higher weight.
yeah that bow of Thimo's looks like a SCREAMMER!! :o
Phil
-
Hey, Pappy and frank, Thanks :)
Yeah Phil, can't wait to get my hands on that bow

I few pictures of the building process
the original reflex
(http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d124/NorthShoreLB/006-5-1.jpg)
Reflex after working her at 22".......as you can see the finished bow hardly took ant set
(http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d124/NorthShoreLB/017-1.jpg)
The shooting in process was quite nerve wracking not knowing if the wood would just blow.
necessary equipment :
6 arrows marked at 20" and 27" to monitor increse in draw
shooting glove
bracer
goggles ;D
...and big waves surfing helmet ;D ;D
