Title: Thorn apple long bow
Post by: Ryano on July 02, 2008, 03:25:25 pm
Here's a bow I just finished up. Its 64" ntn and pulls 50#@27" It is made of Thorn apple which I think is the same thing as hawthorn? I could be wrong though. Anyways, I cut this tree on my mothers property and thought it would be pretty cool to harvest a deer with it there this fall. Who knows, the deer I will take may have eaten the fruit from the very tree I used to make this bow.... ;D I'm pretty impressed with this apple as a bow wood its very dense hard wood and heat treats well. It holds about a inch of unstrung reflex and the tips are very narrow. It has a good cast and smooth draw. The grip is wrapped with rattan from PatB Thanks Pat!  ;D It is dyed with two diferant colors of leather dye to give a good camo effect. Hope you enjoy! Alll coments welcomed. Ryano

:o  Great job Ryan You've been using a lot off different woods for bows and they all seem to make beauties for you. Well done.

Thanks fellas.
Far east archer, Its dyed with alcohol based leather dye.
adb, Yes, its a selfbow.
Thanks Ryan. I like to make mine my own. Not just a copy of some one else's design.
Thanks Jessie. I'm searching for a good local wood that will hold up to similar designs I like to use for my Osage bows, since I have to drive several hours to harvest any Osage, I'd like to find a local wood thats comparable...
Sure Justin.

Justin, the Gray color is black leather dye diluted with rubbing alcohol. I used the gray all over the whole bow first. Then I taped off my lines with painters masking tape and put 3 rivers alcohol based black walnut stain on the grip and tip area's. Nothing to it. It only took me a couple of minutes......

Thanks Keenan. I appreciate it.

Thanks RCS..

Thanks Kegan. Glad to help you out any time bud.

Thanks Shannon. Your quite a artist yourself !

Thanks October. Anybody can do it, its not hard, it just takes practice.

Thanks Radius...

Sweet bow Ryan, I'm impressed that the two stains didn't bleed onto each other. I've looked for rattan but can't find it up here, it sure makes a nice grip.

Nice bow Ryan. I made a Hawthorne bow last Winter.  The wood does indeed heat treat well and makes an excellent bow.  To bad all we get up here are 3" max diameter trees that are for the most part twisted and gnarly.  If the trees had better growth I would use it more often

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Thanks Frank that means a lot Buddy. There's  a lot of fine weapons posted here.....

Greg, I feel like this bow has some good mojo, I don't think taking a deer with it this fall should be a problem !

Dana, I apply the second color around the edge of the tape with a q-tip and use just enough stain on it for it to come off on the wood. If you apply it to heavily it would bleed through for sure.

Marc, I remember you posting that bow Marc. I didn't know Hawthorne was the same thing we call thorn apple at the time. This tree was about 4" through..I sawed it in half on my band saw and got two nice staves out of it. The first one I screwed up when debarking it and slightly violated a small knot and it pulled up a splinter there. This one I was more cautious with and it came out pretty good. We have quite a bit of this wood around our property but its hard to find clear enough wood for full length staves but billets wouldn't be a problem. Ive seen some trees with trunks as big as 8" probally but they don't grow very tall before branching out.

thats about the same dementions of the hawthorn we got around here too. the one ive got drying was a 9" tree. the stave i got is actually 80" long, but it came from the center of a cluster of them. i had to cut through 3 trees just to get to this one stave. its got a bit of a jog in the one end but its pretty strait for the most part.

great job on the stain man. you should bring that one to denton hill....and give it to me!!! :D

Thanks Steve.

Thanks Don. It is Hawthorne.

Thanks Chris, Sounds neet.

Phill, thats a big hawthorne.....Have you split it yet? Does it have much twist?

Thanks Brian.  ;D
Title: Re: Thorn apple long bow
Post by: The Burnt Hill Archer on July 05, 2008, 04:12:30 pm
Yup i split it in half. i did a bit of a kerf the whole length of it befor i split it, but i dont think it was necessary. the bark ran pretty true. it split stait, hardly any twist at all, which i was very surprised with, given the way they normaly grow. i think its because it had to grow strait up to get any sun. ill get some pictures and put em on here.

its got that bit of a jog in the end, but other than that it is pretty strait. you can see in the second pic the strait split. i cant really descern any groth rings. ??? were they hard to see on yours too?

Phil

Phil, its a non porous hard wood like maple. There really is no "early wood" to speak of.
Looks like theres a few bows in that log.  ;D

Ya phillip. All those pictures are in my yard.  ;D
Most of the bow pictures I have posted over the years were taken in my yard.
Last months was across the street a hundred yards by french creek.  ;D
I grew up in the country and I couldnt have it any other way.  ;)
