Its only the end of July and I'm already looking forward to the first Saturday in October. The opening day of archery season here. What are y'all doing to prepare for opening day? I'm getting some river cane shafts straightend and spined.....and I finally broke down and bought one of those digital scouting camera's yesterday. Can't wait to put it out and see what kind of game is in my hunting area's this year ! My buddy is making me some obsidian points for hunting this year. Thats going to be a first for me. I've been hunting with a selfbow for about 5 or 6 years now, but up until now, I've always used store boughten steel broad heads. Any one have any tips for practicing with obsidian points so I dont brake them? I have one of those large soft foam targets like Pappy has on his practice range. You think its safe to shoot them into it until I get the arrows flying well?
-
I have everything already. I just sit around and watch a Bambi DVD. ;D
-
Ryan, I shoot obsidian tips alot and what I've found works well is the walmart styrofoam blocks. You can pick them up for about $15. They don't last for more then a season but for dialing in the stone points they are great. The only points I've broke has been from hitting the other arrows.
Hunting season here starts the last weak of august so we are getting close. Trying to get some more points finished up and doing lots of scouting ;D There is still snow in some of my favorite spots this year, ::)
-
Elk and deer open the first of September.. I am already packed... Hawk a/ho
-
Ryan, I've been using the big foam targets like at Pappy's for years. Get them from the same guy. He usually comes to the Hickory shoot each year and used to come to Elberton. I shoot all my arrows with stone and trade points into it and they come out cleanly.
I have one new bow ready for hunting season...the yew bow I posted recently. If my new osage static seasons enough by mid Sept, I will hunt with it also. I have hardwood and cane arrows tipped with stone that will come along with me. The next thing I have to get is the money for club dues, out of state license and gas. :o :( The way things are going I might be hunting only around the house this year. :(
I will start practicing specifically for hunting season soon. For now, I'm just getting my form and concentration down so when the time comes, all I have to do is concentrate on that "SPOT"!!! Pat
-
Yep! Skrill season opens up mid-august and deer season sept. 6th!
Since the price of meat has sky rocketed.....I have full permission from the Mrs. to hunt my @rse off this year and to fill ye ole freezer! ;D
-
I have a mule deer doe and a pronghorn doe tag. That hunt starts Friday. ;) If Im not ready yet I guess I wont be. Justin
-
I've gotten four new primitive arrows done in the past week..took 'em out and shot 'em several times last week with a maple bow that I'm finishing up.
so heck yea I'm gettin' ready !!
-
I keep giving all the points I finish off to kids, so I have to keep making them. ;D Oh well, I should have a few done by October. If not, I have lots of trade points.
Okie1 and I keep trying to make a shop date to work on bows. I'm hoping I have all my domestic duties done this weekend :'( so I can get something started. Otherwise I'll be back in the wood with the old recurve. :-\

Going after antelope, the last week of august, and Mo bow season opens sept 15, so yea, I B gittin ready!!!!!!
-
yeah, im getting this years dacite points made up. i am happy with my bow selection for this year. i'd say i am almost ready but its still a ways off til mid sept. got my cane arrows together with the exception of the points hafted. i wont choose the actual points until 2 weeks before. ready? oh yeah.
tired of waiting? even more so.
i have a solid block of styrofoam for shooting my stone into. i just shoot them 2-3 times to make sure they fly nice and consistent at 15 yards and thats it. oh and dont shoot more than one at a time or you will break the points on each other. nothin makes me more mad than ruining a good point over good shooting. ;) - Ryan

I'll be ready with my osage bow and cane arra's (if I ever get them done). But I've been practicing everyday with the ol' carbons.
Mike I've been working on the cane shafts and have about 10 straightened now with another 6 to go. One way or another we'll get you a bow finished before season opens. I hope you have a couple of stone points to put on these cane arra's. If not i've got some bandsaw blade I've been making trad points from.

Trying to. Need to buy a new mesh cutting wheel to make some trade points, and need to make up a new longbow (but I don't have any seasoned wood- I'll probably wind up trading for some off here soon enough).
But this will be the first season I've actually got arrows ;D!! I'm psyched ;).
-
Well, it looks unanimous - most of us have bows stacked in the corners but ain't ready yet cause we need to finish one more before the season :D. Sheesh, I'm in the same boat. Have my huntin bow or three to finish, plus some trade bows "I gotta get out" and arra's. Still got a month till bird season - "dove" and am working on some arra's for that. The list goes on and on...........
-
I've got most of my cedar arrows ready with broadheads mounted. Those are for "Ryans" bow. I still need to haft some stone points on some cane arrows and shoot them a few times. I'm also planning to hunt with a little 60" sinew backed recurve some. I have some shafts straightened and ready to fletch for it, but been to busy to get it done.
As for practice, man it's been hot lately! Most of my shooting has been from about 12 yards in my basement. As soon as it cools down a little, I'll start trying to get in some serious practice.
Anybody here have enough actual experience hunting with knapped points, to say whether glass is tough enough to hunt with? I wouldn't mind trying to kill a deer with an old mason jar, ;D the bottoms knap real nice and look cool too.
Paul, have you fixed up any of them footed arrows we traded for yet? Saw Filer
-
I'll start hangin' stands in 2 weeks, and I need to build one ground blind.I've narrowed down my choices of the bows that'll go to the woods with me ,and I've got several" perfect shootin'" arrows ready for sharpenin'.Our season opens in 8 weeks, and countin'. God Bless
-
Yeah I'm pretty much ready. Just finishing the last of my cane arras. Just got a new quiver trying to get use to it now. Pulled out the 3d target and have been giving heck.
-
I'm always ready. I just don't know when I'm going to get to go. I've got to go back to Brazil in two weeks. Our season starts here in late Sept. If I'm gone then and get home and it's over, I'll call a friend in another state. Hopefully, with the friends I've met on here, I can come up with a place to hunt. But, I do have plenty of hunting utinsels ;D.

It ought to work just like obsidian, and that works great. I say give it a go. Justin

The pressure is off with my cane arrow's other then hafting the killing end on and getting them to fly. Looks like this year the acorns and persimmons are going to be plentiful...biggest problem will be which tree they happen to prefer dining under at any one time. Will be hanging stands probably in a couple of weeks. Lookin' forward to it! :)
-
Eddie, your welcome to come up and chase some PA whitetails with me if you want.
-
yeah im psyched, i got my selbow that im using shootin good, just gotta put on broadheads and fletchings to my ash arrows....my dad has his recurve ready and arrows that just need to have the broadheads glued on....im ready for the long days of bein in the woods alone...
-
Thanks Ryan. Might be giving you a call.
-
"I gotta get out" and arra's. Still got a month till bird season - "dove" and am working on some arra's for that. The list goes on and on...........
Paul: You making Flu Flu's for Dove? :o Dang, that's got to be tough. I think I'll stick to my German SxS 16 gauge for those. I have a hard time putting lead on target, let alone a stick. :'(

im working on what i think is wild rose shafts. dont know if they will come out good enough for hunting, but im gonna try it. trying to come up with something to use for points, caint knap stone, so i got to come up with something els. thinking of "borrowing" a skillsaw blade. ::) anyway, other than that i jist got to get me another string for my elb and figure out how to do pat's camo deal with oil and charcoal. good luck fellers!
-
I'm ready any time of the year. I have my arrows from last year so I don't have to mess with them. I'll start shooting them soon. Since deer season does'nt open here in Mt. till the first sat. in sept., I have a little time yet.
-
Eddie: If you need a place to hunt, give me a holler - I'll put ya in the woods, just need to figure in gas :-X :-X.
Shannon: I've not yet had the chance to work on the footed arra's, have been too busy with the cane and other things - all good things come with time. I shall not taste the wine before it's time ;D.
Hey Mike, yep - I'm gonna try bow and arra for dove this year. Sounds like fun, and if I come home with a mess it'll be yet one more simple pleasure to think back on. I ain't countin my chickens yet, but if all works out I'll be sure and post the story :).
-
Way to go Paul. Im going to try grouse with my bow. I found a spot with quite a few the other day. Justin
-
Cowboy, I'd recommend shootin' those dove while they're feeding on the ground...if you're capable of getting a mess of um with your bow while flying, you need to go on the road performin' trick shootin' events! ;D That would be better then Byron Ferguson shootin' aspirins out of the air! ;D ;)
-
I guess I got the first one this year. A mule deer doe about 2 hours into my antlerless hunt. I used my knife I got from mullet in the Christmas trade to skin it. ;) That has got to be the nicest skinning blade I have ever used. Thanks Eddie. ;D Next week I will try to add an doe pronghorn. Sorry no pictures. Justin
-
A bow or gun kill Justin? congrads either way.
-
Congratulations Justin! I went hog hunting yesterday but all I got was 5 rabbits and two racoons. It is just too hot for hogs in the daylight. And I've never been covered up in mosquitos like yesterday.
-
Ryan, it was a an either weapon hunt, but it was a depredation hunt in hayfields inside city limits so only bows can be used. Justin
-
i made 9 arras. at 25 yards they hit within 4" of each other from any of the 3 bows i plan on shooting this year. yup im ready. been scoutin since march ;D
-
Congrats Justin, yep I pretty much stay ready.Just need to check out a few stands. :)
Pappy
-
I guess all I need to do is throw some gear together and get it to fit into my back pack, I have a good bow and some good arrows, and a special spot to head to. Hope they are home. our season starts Aug 30. Kenneth
-
Kenneth, When you punch that rib cage, remember me! ;) ...and I'll have a double order of chicken fried elk backstrap, pasta Alfredo a cigar and a shot of Black Velvet! 8) 8) 8)
Wish I could be with you in your secret spot. Pat
ps. tell Kathie she is in my thoughts.
-
I would like to retract my previous statement. The bows and arrows have been ready, but I am aquiring some bamboo in a trade, so I will absolutely have to make some new arrows with some 175 to 200 grain trade points. I just have to.
-
I put up a stand yesterday, and have one additional to go behind my house. I've set a couple of cedar trees in front of the tree my stands will be in for cover. They were a little open last year after the leave's had dropped. Also did some shooting with my cane arrows.
Saturday after our club shoot, I think we're going to put up stands at another farm I hunt on. ;)
-
Plan on having cane and osage ready for Oct. 1. I keep staring at my EMPTY chest freezer for motivation ;). Good luck to all this season!
Tracy
-
Here is the stand I put up yesterday. It is about 200 yards from my house so that makes it convenient. Also, Bucky(Flossy) is ready to do his(her) part this season. ;)

whew! that looks like a long shot ,Pat.
-
Its inside 15 yards. From that tree I can shoot 3 directions out to maybe 20 yards. Mostly closer...nothing beyond 20.
-
Pat would give any thing if you could be here. You are the best partner ever and It will not be the same hunting and camping alone. If we were on that mountain we could have all those good times more. I am going to pack in an ultra lite camp and set it up at the Dr's camp and hunt from there, at least the first week end. I am also going to use a decoy at my stand site (ground blind) elk scent, and really try to minimise human scent. I had several near close encounters last year so If I can just not screw up. I will definatly have those chicken fiied steaks and shot of canadian for supper and get you off a box of steak for you and Marcia. Hunt good hang in there. Kenneth
-
Kenneth, you know where I'd like to be at the end of this month. Drs camp would be a nice change.
I'll be with you in spirit! ;) Pat
-
Kenneth, I got a feeling this is going to be a successful year for you...I like to wish a fellow hunter/friend to..."shoot straight through both lungs!". ;)
I've hunted Colorado for elk/mule deer three different times without taking an animal. But I consider each trip a successful hunt due to the beautiful country that I throughly enjoyed. Something about hearing a bull elk bugle on a cold morning and a rocky mountain setting...if you've never experienced it, I highly recommend it! Got to be the wildest natural sound known to man, sent chills down my back when I heard it. :)
