I'm pumped about using these baby's this year! My first time using stone points and natural shafts for hunting. The points are obsidian from Justin Snyder, that my neighbor outbackbob48 knaped for me in exchange for some stone. The points are hafted with pine pitch glue and whitetail sinew and the Cain arrows, and sinew wraps are finished with pine pitch varnish. One weighs 560 grains and the other one 565. All and all I couldn't be more pleased with the way these arrows came out, They shoot right were I'm looking. I just hope I can manage to run one threw a nice buck this fall. >:D ;D

Killer arrows Ryan! The fletching is awesome. Did you put pitch on the vein of the feather to make it stick to the shaft as well or are they just loose and laying flat?
~~Papa Matt
-
Matt, I cheated a little bit and used the fletching tape to hold the feathers in place :-[ but they are wrapped on both ends and the middle with sinew. ;)
-
Those are some great looking arra's Ryan - I fugure you'll be sticking one in a deer soon :). I'm still laboring on mine - just put a coat of reddish dye on em, the color almost exactly matches yours.
-
the only thing that could make them arrows more spectacular looking would be some meat sticking on the tips >:D
very nice wish i had them

Those are sweet looking arrows Ryan. I love everything about them. Justin

Cool arrows, Ryan. What do you think about the pitch glue and varnish? Pat
-
Looks like a lethal combination. Good luck!

WOW! those are some great looking arrows. I am certain you will make meat with them. happy hunting brother..... look forward to some pics of them bloody .... HAWK A/ho
-
Great looking arrows, hope you get them even redder soon.
-
Thanks everyone! I sure hope I get a good shot at even a doe with these arrows. I think that will be the ultimate trophy!
Pat, I really like the pine pitch glue. I was shocked how strong it holds. I shot these into a foam target with just the pitch holding them and they held just fine. I think you could just glue them with pitch and not even need to wrap 'em with sinew. The varnish works surprisingly well also especially over the sinew wraps.....

those are some cool looking arrows

Ryan, With pitch glue, if the head comes loose you can just reheat it and let it set back and it will be as strong as ever. Pat
-
Very nice work!!
Best of luck with them too!!
-
Those are some great looking arrows, Hope you get a shot with them.
-
Super nice arrows Ryan, great job hafting those points. Hope you get a deer with both of them.

Now I'm going to have to learn how to make pine pitch glue and varnish - where might a feller come across that information ;D?
-
Thanks everyone. They were actually pretty easy to make just sort of time consuming. Straightening the Cain shafts was the hardest part.
Paul, Patb told me how to do it. Its really quite simple. The glue is 1/3 pine pitch (the white gooey stuff on pine tree's)1/3 bee's wax, and 1/3 finely ground charcoal. Get your self a hot fire going and melt your pine goo in a coffee can. Try to get all the impurity's out of the pine goo like bark and bugs and stuff. Then mix the in the wax and the charcoal. Then take a stick and ball up the goo on the end of the stick while its cooling. This will give you a glue ball. Then just use the glue ball like you would hot melt for regular metal field points. once the stuff cools and it hardens its amazingly strong.
The varnish is just pine pitch dissolved in denatured alcohol. Pat said its better to use the crusty powdery white pitch for the varnish than fresh oozy stuff so the varnish with dry and not be as sticky.

What he said! ;D
-
have you thought of using the pine varnish on bows? looks pretty good on them arras!
-
ya, I had thought about it Phil but it tends to get sticky if you hold it in your warm hand to long. Might be ok with a coat or two of paste wax over top of it though.
-
Great lookin arrows Ryan! I believe you'll get to try 'em out this fall. Maybe on a big buck!
-
Thanks Ryan/ Pat: I know I've seen that recipe on here before - this time I wrote it down ::) ;).
-
I've found an easy way to get pine pitch. Just put some "fat lighter, lighterknot" pine wood in a can of water. Bring it to a boil
. The resin will float to the top . Then take a pop-cycle stick and just twirl it through the floating resin. As it builds up on the stick, occasionly dip it in some cold water and then twirl some more. When you want to use the resin just heat it and drip.
-
Ryan , Your finished arrows look even better than when I saw them last week. I hope the heads hold up to the job ahead they are to the best of my abilty at this time, I hope I can improve my Knapping skills, Justin an Ryan thanks for the great obsidian, It,s nice to work an pretty sharp. The cane arrows are really straight and pretty to boot. Great job Ryan Later Bob
-
Thanks Eddie - I'm jotting that down in my recipe ;).
-
Wow really cool arrows Ryan!
That pine finish really came out well, no wonder you were askin about using it for bows.
Is there some ingredient you could add to it that will make it more heat resistant? Maybe linseed oil....I dunno ;D
Again, those are really nice and thanks for the tips, gonna write those down too hehe
