This is a red oak board flatbow I built for a build along to get others interested in making their own selfbows. It's Comstock style, with almost the exact same dimensions as the elm Meare Heath overbuilt bow he wrote about in The Bent Stick- the handle being a little bigger. I originally just intended to make this bow up and let it sit until it finds need, I was so suprised with the accuracy and cast that I'll be using it along with my Osage ELB for hunting this fall. I've also taking a liking to heavy handles, so I'll be tying some American longbows soon as well. The only downside to this bow is that the handle joint may give on me, I'm not sure. It's been a while since I've done a glue up other than overlays.
It's 66" long, with a 8-9" handle section. The limbs are 2" wide for the most part and the pin nock tips are 1/2". I've been using a dished grip on my last few deep handled bows after seeing the beautiful work Manny does, and have to come to like them alot. I also used spar urethane to finish it up. It's plain and simple, but a real shooter, so I named it "Jane". It draws about 67# at 27.5".

Thats pretty cool Kegan. Almost exactly what I am doing for a well deserving student of mine. Thanks for the motivation to finish.
Oh and the tiller looks pretty good on that one.

plane and simple, just the way i like em. nothing on it that doesnt need to be there. good job man!

Nice looking bow Kegan hope you get some meat with it :)
-
Kayak....give the boy a few days. With those arrows and that bow I am sure that there will be a HERO picture this season.
-
I like it a whole lot.Ronnie

OK now! Don't go getting fancy on me now! Another nice one Kegan. Pretty good for a red oak bow and a proper companion for the osage ELB. 8) Pat

Good looking bow. Tiller looks real good to these novice eyes. I'm in the middle of a hickory bow using the same dimensions, also from Comstock's book. I think I'll try the dished grip as well, Manny's bows always look good with them.

Looks like a power house. Very well done but what else do we expect? Bookmarked, too.
-
Looks good Kegan, like the tiller. Is it Jane as in Jane DOE ;D

Nice bow, Hope it brings home the bacon.

Thanks everyone, that's means alot ;D! I've been pretty tired after school, and 76# is alot of bow to pull. Seems like this bow will be getting it's fair share, and with the deer coming back to the area, hopefully I have enough patience to wait for them to take pity on me and my sticks ;).

Nice one Kegan, I know what you mean by the handle popping of, it happened to my BOO backed Red Oak too,...hey if that happens you can build the same shape handle with layers of leather and superglue, it will feel has hard as wood but will have just enougth give to stay put,.... good luck and stick one ;D
-
One of the best bows you've built to date IMO, Kegan. Nice job.
-
Good job Kegan buddy! ;D I like plain "Jane" bows!
-
very cool bow.
my first bow looked like this but its broken now and im working on a new one. looks exactly like yours ;D

I agree with Ryano. I have looked at a lot of Kegans bows in the past and can definitely see improvements in his ability to tiller a weapon. This one is definitely his BEST one to date.
-
Thanks everyone. I've been trying lately to make each one better than the last (with Red Oak stick being an exception ;D), not only as far as tiller, but also in terms of aesthetics and just plain "shootability". Glad you all noticed :)!
-
Great looking bow Kegan. I'm glad you explained since I was thinking it was a little on the light side...... for you. ;) How about some more pictures of the grain orientation. Justin
-
Justin- Thank you :). I don't have a good photo of the grain, just the comparison picture I used when I started building it, and explaining what to look for. Oddly enough, I broke the board with the better grain, and it seems like the only thing on this bow that might go is the handle. Jane is made from the top board. The grain runs across the limbs over about 12" or so.

Nice job on that tiller!! Now ,go fill one of your antlerless tags, and give Jane a last name.
God Bless

That pic of you aiming at the camera... wow! To think in a couple of weeks that there will be a deer there instead of a camera, I am so glad I am not a deer that might walk infront of you!
That is work I can only dream of doing!

Thanks guys :)!

NIce bow Kegan! That is my personal favorite stlye :)
-
Wow, some wide limbs. I'm a tad late to post, but that's a fine looking bow and powerful. Be sure to post pic's when Jane makes some meat :).
-
Thanks cowboy :). It's been some time since I've made one with full 2" wide limbs. Used ot have such trouble with tillering them, I guess I learned a few things from all the great bows on this site :).

I like the flat bows. I have one made out of white oak. Shoots great, but I am outgrowing it.
