This is a hard maple bow Im working on. Ill admit selfbows are not my specialty but I have a good time making the few Ive made. The natural character in the wood throws me off a bit compared to working with flat stock. right now its at a low brace and pulling 35#s @17" Looks to me like both limbs need work in the mid to outer areas especially the right side. What do you think?

between scraping sessions.

I think you are right on with the mid need some more bending,I really can't see much of the right one but from what I can see you are right.Slow and easy and exercise as you go. :)

Looking good Jesse, but as the rest said stay off the fades and get the mid to about 6" from the tip bending more.
Does the left limb have some twist? Make sure you look at the tiller from both sides especially if there is a little twist
in the limbs.
-
You got the right idea Jesse. 8)
-
You're doing great. You've got the fades working first, which is correct, and now just get the mid & tips to come around, and you're there. Go easy, you're getting close. Like Torges says "stalking tiller..."
-
Looking good Jesse ! Do as the others have said :D
-
The left is bending a little more in the fades. I would take a little more off the right fade then work over the mid and outer limbs. Justin

You're getting good advice...what they said! :)
-
Slightly off the topic: is that bow made from a board or a tree stave? I like maple. Looking very nice!
-
NT its from a stave I gave him :)
-
Just got home. Glad to see all the replies. Thanks for the advice. Yup Dana is right this is from a stave he gave me.
Im glad you are all in agreement. Gives me a little confidence :)
Dana it had some twist that I heated out but it might be creeping back a little. Your right about looking at both sides. it looks a little different when I flip it.
Ill post more when I get a chance to scrape some more off.

ok I did a little more work on it.
The first pic is with the top limb on the right. The second is the other side with the top on the left.
Right now its pulling 40# @ 20 it seems to me that either way I turn it the right side needs work. :) A little help please?

Man i think it looks good.....then again i don't have to many bows under my belt :D
-
Thanks John. Ive been staring at this so long my eyes are playing tricks on me :) I need some more advice :)
-
I'd give the right limb a few scrapes mid limb on. Easy does it. Otherwise, it looks good. Jawge
-
you sure you flipped that bow around?
both limbs on the right side look the same as do both left limbs.
yup just like jawge said, midlimb out on the right side. he knows what hes talking about
tim
-
:D 100% positive I flipped it around. Note the timber hitch on the lower limb. I even marked the bow to make sure which was which because they look the same..Look at the marks on the fades. on one side I put just a t for top and on the other there is a t and a b for top and bottom ;D So when you say right limb which picture are you referring to? Its drving me nuts that the tiller looks the same when I flip it. It must have a little twist in it.
-
I wonder if it is a bit twisted, Jesse. It could be that the pictures are tilted. Let me see. Jawge
-
I missed that you showed both sides. It is great that you looked at the tiller from both ways. I straightened out the pics on iPhoto. With top on right that right tip looks a little stiff. Then with top on left it doesn't. I think you are right that you have a little twist. One way to tell is mark off 6 inch increments on the braced bow on both limbs. Measure front and back and compare on same sides of each limb. What's your draw length? Jawge
-
looks great,,,,go shoot it!!....snake
-
Jesse its lookin really good to me I would go ahead and work it out another inch or two, if I remember right you draw 27 or 28" so you have some room to play.
Hows the unbraced profile look? Is it starting to take any set? watch that you don't get too much bend at the fades and leave the tips stiff. What weight ya shootin for?
-
I hope it is OK if I post my pic of my FIRST BOW here and get a bit of expert advice. This was my first attempt, made from a Lowes 1x3.........probably a bit light in the pull for most of you, but it works and shoots nice. How does the tillering look to you all? This one was oak, the one on the bench now is White Ash, a bit wider and will be stiffer.
thanks for your opinions!! piper

looks good to me islandpiper :)
Just got back from putting up my stand in the great north woods. :)
Jawge. Great idea I will try that thanks for the input
Dana your right my draw is 27" The unbraced profile still looks good. The top limb is taking a bit more set than the bottom but both are holding reflex at this point.

Jesse, that was an idea I got from Al Herrin's book, Cherokee Bows and Arrows. Let me know. I'd like to know if I am just imagining. Jawge
-
Thanks again Jawge. I want to know if Im just imagining too. My wife suggested I move the light in my shop. Its one of those clip on aluminum dish lights and its angled from the corner over to the other side. You never know ;D Shes been right before ;D I'll let ya know
-
Jesse I think Angie is on to something with the light, better tell her thanks and take her to dinner :)
-
Islanpiper, tiller looks great on that. Congratulations! Jawge
