Title: New Hickory "Ridge Runner"
Post by: The Burnt Hill Archer on October 07, 2008, 09:16:53 pm
Here is a bow i made for my cousin. Its the one that i posted about in my thread on humidity. It came out 57#@29.5". 70"ntn, 1 3/4" wide at the fades, down to 7/16" tips. apricot overlays. i didnt burnish this one before i stained it, so the stain took a bit better. 8 coats of tru-oil.

i heat treated it twice, and induced 2.5" of reflex. i tried to take out some deflex that the lower limb had about 2/3 out, but it came back, hence the somewhat strange profile. it took about 1 1/4" os set right after unbracing, but the upper limb is strait after rest, and the lower limb only shows the deflex. i also had to bend the lower tip to the side to get the string to line up. this is the most corective bending ive had to do so far, so it was a bit of a stretch. it is also the fastest ive ever gotten a bow from stave to finish. it ususally takes me a couple of months at least, well he told me that he wanted it for this years archery season, which was only 4 weeks away! well i told him i could do it, but i really wasnt quite sure i could. i added up the hours and ive got just 38 hours into it.

well enough babbling, i really dont like to do alot of reading on these posts, so ill get right to the pics. i kinda went overboard so there are quite a fiew.

Phil

awesome bow! the riser looks great, is that golden oak stain? I have been making hickory longbows 1 1/8" wide for a while, but I think I might go to the wider, flatter bows-I havent achieved more than 42 pounds, and you nailed 57 (beautiful work by the way, and the way I look at it, the more pics, the better!) Nice work, hope your cousin can make some meat with that beauty. -jimmy

thanks for the kind words all!

Jimmy, thats dark walnut stain. 3 coats actually. hickory doesnt take stain very well... but it will take leather dye. and yeh, it depends on how short you go, but i just finished up another hickory that i started last year. it turned out 63"ntn 52#@27". thoes limbs were 2" wide. thanks agian!

Gordon, that means alot comming from you. your build-allong is what inspired me to take more time on my handle and tips, so thanks!

David, nope but i just realised that your name was RidgeRunner this morning  :D but no, he has a restauraunt back in my home town called The Ridge Runner Cafe. and hes got a BIG buck all picked out that hes gonna take with it, so i thought it would be fitting. ;D

Thanks again!

Phil
