Work is really slow right now and i got some extra time off this week that i didnt plan on so i spent the whole day finishing this up.. i am very very pleased with it. the wood is beautiful and it shoots "oh so" smooth.
its a wee sprite, measuring in at 55 inches tip to tip
the limbs are roughly 1 1\2 wide. i let the grain determine the width.
it has several knots that really add to the beauty. and small static recurves for just a little "pick me up"
This was out of a stave that my friend Dax sent me, it was mostly sapwood but had enough heartwood to do the trick so i decided it would be more aesthetically pleasing if i chased it down to the heartwood. due to twisting i had only 55 inches of good wood to work with so i had to make it count.
it came in just a little under weight so i decided to try and flip the tips. one of the tips had a large knot and i knew wouldnt take the bend well....but that doesnt stop me . the one side recurved tight and perfect so i wrapped the knot up with b-50 and boiled it for about 45 minutes and then bent it too. the knot kept wanting to pull the recurve out so i wrapped it with b-50 again and then glued a thick leather patch on to make it stiffer..worked beautifully so i hid the leather with the chocolate beaver strips and ofcourse then had to match it on the other side. all in all - turned out great.
shoots real quiet and quick and pulls right about 54-56 lbs @ 25ish inches

Very nice bow, I like the recurved tips.
Nice shot, now you have to change the apple for a smaller target.
-
An excellent bow for such a short stave. You're turning out some really nice work.
-
Very nice and a good job on seeing the bow in the stave :)
-
Nice little bow. Did you use steam or dry heat to recurve the tips. I have tried bending BW before with no success.
Good thing your Dad wasn't looking at you when you shot. He might have flinched! :o Pat

That's a fine lookin little bow Ryan! Your really whoopin out some dandies ;D. I've tried to get several people to stand with an apple on thier head - no takers yet ::).
-
Thanks a lot guys, I like this one better than the last osage recurve i made..lol but atleast they are 2 different bows entirely- heavy and light. so i'll get use out of them both.
Pat- I boiled them actually, i was using steam but wasnt getting the results i was looking for so i stood the bow up in the pot and boiled about 6 inches of them, then i bent it really slow and let the weight of my arm creep the bend in...Walnut does not seem very willing to bend, i was lucky to get this much i believe.

Looks like a great riparian whitetail hunter. Love short bows anyway. Got your neat weapon bookmarked for November Self Bow of the Month for sure.

hope to be able to produce nice ones like that one day... love the walnut and really like the recurve you put in it... looks to be like it will definantly do the job and being a shorty like that would love to hunt with it... nice strong and tacticle... good job...

Nice bow Ryan,I like everything about it.I'm gonna have to give BW a try. God Bless

Gr8 job,,,,,,i love it

That's really a nice bow. I'm glad to see yet another piece of raw materials I've managed to scrape up has turned into something. I can hardly manage to make a paper airplane, but I keep trying. Ryan's also made some really nice arrows from some cane and turkey feathers I sent him and killed a couple of nice deer in MT with those. To say he makes me sick is an understatement. :'( This black walnut has been a real challenge, as the wood presented quite the challenge. Ryan has been at it for over year with this bw and his determination has paid off. It's really nice to see. Thanks, Ryan.

thanks a lot guys. i appreciate the kind words.
its true, Dax is a major supplier to me of the things i cannot get here in FL like river cane and some other woods. We have a hunting trip planned together for January in his state of Alabama so hopefully this walnut bow will make the trip and with any luck stick a whitetail.

Whoo hoo! Nice un! I like those short cupid style bows also.

Sweet bow. I love those short bows. Nice to see a Black Walnut bow.

Very impressive!!! 55" and those little mini recurves are incredible. Love the grain on black walnut. going to have to give it a try. thanks for the inspiration and congratulations ;)

I love it. Tiller looks perfect as usual. I need to get out and make some shavings, I'm loving your recurves lately.

Nice bow!

Black wlanut huh? I have'nt seen a bow done in that yet so I am greatly encouraged to give it a try. I harvested an 8"diameter one this summer. I thought it was elm and it ended up being walmnut. I split it into quarters and wasn't sure if I was even gonna work it,but now I know I better get it debarked and roughed out. Don't think I will try making mine that short but I'm gonna give it a go none the less. Glad you posted this cuz these bad boys are super straight too. Anyone know how long BW needs to cure? Danny
-
thanks for the encouragement guys.
sidewinder- i cured mine for a little over a year, then i chased the ring down to the heart wood.
how much heart wood do you have on it if you quartered it? i heard the sapwood works ok too. the one i tried from sapwood broke, but it was twisted every which way to sunday.
if your interested in tradin one of the BW staves you let m know ok? ;) ;) ;D - Ryan

Great looking bow, and impressive that you stuck with your plan to flip the tips and made it happen! ;)

Looks like a good turkey bow. Really like the all heartwood and the character knots. Nice bow Ryan!
