Can someone give me a link to some good videos on straightening stick arrow shafts? Just can't afford those dowels.

Go to the 3 Rivers site. they have several arrow building vids.

I've made a few videos on the subject.  I'm straightening reed (in the video below) but the same principles apply to shoots and cane.
