I was walking through the woods and came across a fallen tree. All the trees in the immediate area are either hickory or maple, but this one (which has been down less than 2 months, the last time i was through there) had no leaves left on it, and I dont know enough to make an educated guess between the two, so i thought you guys might be able to.

I'm no expert but I would say that it's maple.

Hard to tell from the pics. It seems to have opposite branching, which narrows it down a bit. Maple and ash both have opposite leaves/branches. How big is the tree? It would also help if you had your location filled in in your profile.

It looks like a young soft maple, did you look on the ground for the fallen leaves?

It kinda looks the trunk of the red maple in my front yard. How big around or thick is the butt end of this log?
