No, no, Minuteman, the stuff you sent me was fine and good to go. Well, this is fine too but is still active - he did put it in a zip-loc bag though. It is some stuff another generous gent (different forum) sent me from CA - but it's from a tree he just cut down and cut up, and he didn't know much about spaulted wood, besides that other folks would like to have it. He was trading big chunks of it, out there, for stuff he could use but offered to send me some cut scraps. I was tickled to get them too.
That sounds like a good idea, Pat - a glass jar - like making sun-steeped tea, (only without the liquid). Luckily I learned that lesson with the glass table, the easy but graphic way. John Scifres said it made him cringe (which it did me too after reading what he added afterwards), that, by the way, broken glass tables make great knapping material - that was enough of a lesson for me - LOL I've got to get me a longer work bench, or only do one limb at a time!
