CA Black Locust... Anyone have some?
« on: March 22, 2013, 11:58:35 pm »
Tomorrow Im working on my last BL stave, I had 4, broke 1 and gave 2 away. Id love to find some more. Does anyone know where to find some on the west coast? Seems a tad rare out here.

Ah, if only you lived closer. I have a abundance of 6-8 inch BL trees here, great stuff.

Seen it growing up in Nor Cal.  There's bunches out near Wllow Creek and down near Willits. You gotta hunt around some but its there.

First off it your breaking that many bows. I bet you useing heat. I'd also bet those breaks came at places where you over heated and dehyrated the wood at that spot.
HEAT SURE MAKES THE FIRE GOING
I made my first 2 bows out of BL. I've made a few others since then.
  Nothing wrong with BL,
  FORGET THE HEAT

Im not sure if my original post was clear. I broke one bow and gave two staves away. Im working on my last BL stave today.
Im not using heat. The one that did break was way too stressed... It was my first BL and my first lever bow. Simply overstressed it, snap crackle POP!

I understand your first post.

How come you gave away 2 if they are rare?

My friend asked if I had any staves available so that he and his granddad could make some bows.
There is an abundance of woods in my area, I just happen to be on a BL kick right now.
