My son was born in January and I'm making him a deer skin jacket. There are 2 small holes in the back from a knife nick. I want to sew a patch over it I. The shape of some cherokee significant symbolism as my great x 3 grandmother was full blood. Any help? It doesn't have to be month related or big. I may just go with bead work sewn in...

Sleek, here is an example of a Cherokee coat from around 1820 or 1830. Lots of eastern coats had the "cape" around the collar area. I've got a few photos of Cherokee items with beadwork, if I could find them. Most of it is like a floral applique'. Cherokee were wearing European clothing so early on, it is difficult to find very many historic examples of hide coats, etc. There are several examples of beaded moccasins and bags, just not much clothing.  Curtis

The buzzard and water beetle were both very significant in the Cherokee creation story.
