American Elm / Ulmus Americana
« on: September 14, 2014, 09:09:27 pm »
While hiking the river bottoms today, down by the city park, I ran across a Treasure Trove of freshly trimmed American Elms.
But the City had not cut them up into small sections yet.  :D
Luckily I carry a saw, some wedges, a small sledge and a bottle of TBIII when I go hiking.  >:D
So,,, me being "frugal" and all, I split out a few staves and brought them home.
I yanked the bark and smeared glue over the backs and ends.
I have never worked with any elm species before.
My question is, what types of bow designs work well with American Elm / Ulmus American???
Target is 50@28 once they cure.

I think elm will be good for any design,a heavy heat treating is a must IMHO!cook the belly dark brown, when it smells like pancake syrup your on the right track and cook it some more!takes about an hour per limb.
Some like motorboats,I like kayaks, some like guns,I like bows, but not the wheelie type.

I have used Elm in several different designs. I like it myself. Give it a good heat treat and I think you will like it as well.

Even without heat treating it is exceptional. With heat treating it is the most versatile and really the best all round bow wood in existence.
Virtually every bow wood has something about it that makes bowyers say "but...."
 Not elm.

Would Elm also work for arrows shafts?
