These are a set I just finished on a 140lb English yew bow going to a museum display.  Local cow horn, shaped entirely with a knife and the string groove made with knife and then sandpaper.

Very beautiful. I will be trying this as well on my next set of horn nocks. I agree. You want to try to figure out the process to how they got to their product not just have the same end product. The methods will teach you a lot of the whys behind certain aspects of the product and maybe tell a bit of story of the environment in which they were made culturally.

Here is my first attempt to make a copy of the 'Mary Rose' nock using a knife.

This is the Yew stave Will gave me in 2017 (100lbs at 30in).

The other is an antler nock on a Elm bow. This was just shamfered at the bottom and the slot made with a file.

Perfect!  Lovely linen string too ;)

So how long did the nock take, using just the knife?

Hi Will

About an hour, but I was trying to reproduce some of the 'bumps' around the top half.

I smoothed it down using a Stanley knife as a scraper and this process took out some of these details.

I still used my 1/8 in round file for the slot.

I do the same thing, finishing with the blade.

Mine take about 10 mins including the groove, but I do start with horn thats very thin and already 99% of the finished shape.

Damn, I must get some cow horns. Who would have thought something so simple can be so beautiful and hard to obtain here.

I discovered this just recently. Could have sved me soooo much work. File to shape, 120 grit smooth, then card scraper finish. Done. I Finish with gelatin glue for nice glossy finish without too much fuss......
