Beginner Question

I have not yet tried flintknapping, but after spending a while in this forum, I just have to take a whack at it. There is a lot of ledge around where I live that seems like it would be the cat's ass. It breaks relatively easy and a lot of the time you can find really sharp natural pieces. Would this be a good starting point for me, or should I look for something else?

I don't have any pictures at the moment, but I will see if I can remedy that soon. Also I live in Fredericton New Brunswick Canada.

I suppose I should ask, what characteristics am I looking for in particular for something that will lend itself well to flintknapping.

stone that flakes with a concoidal (sp?) fracture.  Like a BB hitting glass,  the hertzian cone.

If it's ledge like i encountered in NH then it won't knap. I don't know whats in your area. Should research chert or lithics in your area you may get a lead.

new brunswick does have chert, but its also a huge area. kinda like saying new england has chert. hit it, if it breaks clean, use it.
