I have been using a reel that a buddy of mine turned on his wood lathe.  We drilled two holes all the way through it and tie it on with wet rawhide lace below the handle.  Sanded super smooth, it works good.  We made the wooden reel smaller in diameter but deeper than those metal ones they sell at 3 Rivers.  I will post a pic when I can.  It's hard to go back to fg bows after you have been shooting selfbows, isn't it?

I use a cheap plastic spool reel that I mounted on a piece of wood, the just tape it to the front of the bow.
