Hawk ideas?!?
« on: May 29, 2013, 07:34:16 pm »
I have a friend who might be wantin to swap some taxidermy work for a native style flint hawk. I have a nice 7" head busted out, but I'm looking for some good ideas on how to mount it to a handle. Here's the head...

If you have ideas or picture, let me have em.

Dang it man! That's a killer blade! I'd haft it to some Osage with pitch and rawhide wrap. They seem pretty straight forward. I've seen your knives, you otta be able to knock this out of the park ;)

Have you got the elk antlers yet? I've got a similar set that I sent to you that I was going to use for a handle on my Shrew hawk. Always thought a straight antler would look cool with a primitive style head.

Thanks Will for the vote of confidence. I figure I can put it together, but sometimes I lack the creative juices that flow so readily on this forum. Osage seems to be the go to wood for everything, but then there is a reason for that I guess (The King!)

Eddie, a picture would be nice. I was thinkin something simple with maybe a bit of feather adornment. I'm not too good at painting so I plan to avoid that.

Art, I haven't got it yet, but I'm sure it will show up soon. The right antler might make a very nice handle. The deer around here don't grow straight anything very often. This blade might be too big for antler though. Gonna need to find the right idea and the right size handle otherwise the stone will overpower the handle and it look out of balance.

Scott, here is mine. It is probably not fancy looking for a Hawk but it is a solid fit. This is the way most Celts were mounted.

Alright, this is what I got so far. Ground the edges down so they're fairly blunt. Carved the hole out to be wedge shaped (thanks for the idea, John.) Getting ready to sand it and fill the void with pitch to set the blade. Feedback welcome!

Alright I think I'm done with it now. Wrapped with rawhide, burned in some tribal designed of my own creation, and finished with turkey feathers, sinew and beads. A little linseed oil rubbed into the handle.

Let me know what you think.
