I thought Sunday was for rest?
« on: November 30, 2014, 03:56:12 pm »
It is the first day that hasn't been windy in a week or so. Just our luck that it is also about 35 degrees. Tyke had a neighbor with a black locust that they cut to hell. The maintenance guy at the park said he didn't ,mind if we cut it down, so today was the day. Felling trees in the open is all fine and dandy, felling them between 2 homes is a different ballgame. We did just fine, Roped off and dropping limbs the right direction. Here is the haul (What we have at my place anyhow), minus an 8 footer and the 5 foot trunk (about 16 inches across). The bottom log is a 10 foot Siberian elm we got a few weeks back. In a few months we should be back in some bow wood.

Don't forget to look for billet wood.  A 3" x 34" stick will make a bow.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

I'm not 100% sure that's black locust, but the picture quality isnt the best either.

The color is off quite a bit in the photo. What looks yellow, or gold is actually red. From all I know about black locust, it seems to be black locust. The bottom log is Siberian Elm.

PD, the people who lived in this trailer butchered this tree this past summer. What you see standing is all that was left. The park is moving the trailer in the lot. Tyke asked if we could cut the tree down (We thought they were moving the trailer out) and of course the maintenance guy was happy to let us do it. Not a lot of margin for error. My tree cutting experience is felling pines in the forest. A far cry from dropping them between two trailers.

Jeff, If you need some, I am pretty sure that we could let you have a stave or two. The big trunk will give some good short staves, the long branch we have should also give a bunch. I'll let you know when the wood is ready. More than likely a next fall project.

Fall might be good.  After I get my Christmas projects done, I may have to slow down for a while.  My wife is starting to lose patience with some of the mess and my one-track mind.

Nope.  This one has too many benefits to her.  She puts up with an amazing amount from me, and I am lucky beyond words.  It is definitely worth it to keep her happy, and not all that hard to do.  I won't be stopping with all my playthings, just slowing down a little.

BTW, got some cool colored glass slabs from a student today.  Can't wait to see what happens when I try to chip them.

My wife's always wanting me out in the shop! Actually, it's cause she sews a lot and knows when I'm bored SHE loses craft time!

Mine too, but it is because she doesn't like people around when she cleans. And, when I'm in the shop she can't hear me lol
