I have seen this before, not sure what causes them, the first time I saw them I kept expectin to mfind old fence in the stave. I wraped mine with sinew they held up fine.

None taken gutpile ;) Here in the midwest, I've seen this feature many times and that's why I stated it is typical.  If you look at it from the side, you'll notice that it's like a wave in the growth rings. I work around it and then bring that small area to the same growth ring w/ gooseneck scraper. I've not had any failures due to this, backed or unbacked.

glad you feel that way Tracy...thats why I said these are not typical to me anyway..from the side you do not have the wave of growth rings it is almost non exisitant but you can feel them....kinda weird...I feel we will be able to get a good shooter out of it just got to be careful and lay it out the best we can... ;D...gut
