Tiller is a stripper,I am more of a splitter and grinder kind of guy.Ya split and grinding for life. ;)
Tried the stripping and didn't like it as well. :)

I found the secret of stripping feathers! Turn the feather so the concave part faces you. Pinch the feathers at the top and pull them away from you and at a slight angle. The feathers come right off of the quill with none of the ratchis attached. It so much faster than splitting and grinding. You can put it directly into your fletching jig and attach them to the shafts.

Check Mickeys(aka The Ferret) website he has a nice set of pictures showing how to strip a feather.
Doesn't always work either, seems like the older really dry feathers don't strip so well.
