Don't give up!
« on: March 08, 2009, 07:05:14 pm »
After reading this little poem below by a member of TradGang...

I split a very nice hickory stave
I shaved it plain and true
when halfway to a nice recurve
 I found a split - it blew!

I replied...

You'll find when making bows of wood
with all the things you know
that even though you've tried your best
you really never know

but if you take it as defeat
with all the things you know
the bow you want to build yourself
you'll really never know

so get back up and try again
with all the things you know
another stave, a few more hours
and you will have your bow    ;D

It wasn't one of those run for cover deals. I was experimenting with an unbacked decrowned stave and it just shot two splinters down each side of the lower limb. The string caught em. Pretty comical looking actually.Ron

I have done the same before
Sometimes it made me curse
But I agree completely
With the wisdom in your verse

Pick the splinters from your eyebrows
Rub the pumpknot on your head
Don't throw your rasp at the shop cat
Start another bow instead

And when it's finally tillered
And you're shooting it outside
You can start a big ol' bonfire
With the one that hurt your pride

Pat-  I don't know what you started but-

You guys are good!
There is no doubt-
we shave and shape
and laugh and shout.

But we're not quitters
we each stand tall!
we stand together
each one for all!

So help each other
and through travail
we're all together
we cannot fail!

Hey guys, Wells was the author of the original poem I replied to. He's quite the poet!
Wells, I'm still trying to come up with something but have hit a block. ???    Maybe I ought to try haiku...fewer lines! ::)

I don't know why I started this, but it has been fun.  I hope to meet you one of these days!
