Herb's Bow!
« on: March 22, 2009, 06:06:47 pm »
Last year at the N C State Traditional Bow Championships, near Hickory NC, Herb Reynolds ask me to build him a bow. Herb was the founder and life time president of The Carolina Traditional Archers, the club that sponsors the shoot. I found and bought the stave from a vender at the event(Yazoo's Dad) and Herb and I discussed the specifics of the bow he wanted.
A few weeks after the State Shoot I sadly learned of Herb's death. After contemplating the man I was going to make the bow for I decided to go on with my plans but I would donate Herb's Bow to CTA, to be raffled off at the State Championships this year. The bow Herb asked me to build was going to be very specific for him. The resulting bow is not the bow that Herb and I discussed but a bow that would be more appropriate for a raffled bow...and I'm sure Herb would approve.
I decided on a traditional American longbow style, 68"t/t and pulling 50#@28". The bow is ambidextrous, has cherry bark backing(thanks to Joe Klink) and deer antler and ipe tip overlays. The handle has a leather wrap and the arrow rests are small wedges of leather....and here she is!

George, Herb had been in bad health for years but it never discouraged him or slowed him down. He was a very special person and is sadly missed by many.
Yazoo, I bought the stave from your Dad at Hickory last year.
Thanks David. I wanted to make this bow special for Herb and Joe's cherry bark set it off nicely!

Pat, that is a beauty, and I think a great memorial and tribute to Herb, far better than some cold tombstone.

Nice Job Pat!  ;D
Your cherry bark always looks a different color than the stuff I've harvested here. Ours is more purplish red....

Outstanding Pat. you out did your self on this one. Very Nicely done.

Bow looks perfect. Excellent Idea on the raffle. I'm sure it will benefit both the CTA and Herb's memory.

nicely done,
