hackberry recurve
« on: May 17, 2009, 10:07:05 pm »
I just heard jmilbrandt had a hackberry recurve blow up.  he was the inspiration for this one.  I nearly lost it to the fire while tempering the belly.  One of my kiddo's decided he want to jump off the jungle jim while i was tempering.  it got blacken a little but it has survived.  64" ntn 48# @ 28"  it shoot real smooth and quiet.  brace is set at 6.5" seems to work best.  the back is dyed with green rit, but i'm not sure it turned out well.  certainly blends in with the trees.  it is just a bit under weight but it shoots everybit as fast as my 50+ longbows.  I tell you hackberry is such a pleasure to work with, such a tough wood.

Very nice bow with a really good looking tiller job. I've only made one hackberry bow and was surprised with how well it shot. It's a very light wood compared to osage...had to leave the limbs thicker then I'm used to doing with other woods to make weight.

Your bow really turned out sweet!  ;)
