Think I found rock
« on: October 01, 2009, 01:44:29 pm »
I was elk hunting in the mountains SW Alberta and found this rock it has  a limestone cortex and had a few flakes bust out of it.
Someone once said if you got limestone you got chert. Going by that I'm thinking it might be true. Want to spall it where do I start?
I'm a newbie at this. Just flaked a little glass but what the heck no guts no glory. any advice would be welcome.
Thanks Leroy

yup looks chippable to me. not sure what it is tho.
try hitting it in lower corner at this angle with another rock or small hammer and see what happens.

hit it higher and harder if you want a bigger piece and lower or at arrow for smaller.

Try knapping a spall raw. See how it chips. I am no good at cooking rocks.

I've never seen basalt with a cortex like that, but what you call it will have no affect whatever on the rock.  If it flakes, it flakes.  A rose by any other name, etc.
