Ptarmigan with a rock
« on: October 11, 2009, 04:16:04 am »
I was reading about the wood chuck kill with a rock and it brought back a flood of memories of stuff I have killed with stones. Here is a picture of some Ptarmigan I killed with rocks while on a sheep hunt in the Wrangles with a friend, he killed one more than me and neither one of us could lift are arms the next day.  But man those freeze dried meals taste better with par boiled bird.  By the way the weapon you see in the back ground is a 7mm mag.  After 28 days chasing sheep with a selfbow it was time to make it happen,  as it turned out I didn't get a ram anyways.  And at the end of the hunt I wish I had my trusty bow at least it would have been lighter.

Rock Hunting.  I don't think it gets any more primitive than that. ;D

After the brain, and hand, definitely one of the first weapons.  The Grouse in Montana are not the brightest either.  They will fly up in a tree in front of you, and bob and weave their heads as you throw stones at them.  The blue grouse, are worse.  They will stop, and look at you, like did you just throw that at Me? ::)  A good throwing stick will clean up on them.  Of course, a couple of rocks will take em out also. ;)  Good throwing, and good eating.  At least you didn't go home being skunked! ;)
