Stacey and I took a drive into Montana today about six miles from the house,we were going after snowshoe hares with our bows. about fifty feet from the jeep we cut fresh lion tracks in about a foot of fresh snow. We decided to track the cat for fun and took off after it, about an hour later I spotted the cat crossing a clearing and tried to get ahead of it across the ridge. The cats tracks went through heavy timber and under a big fir tree. Stacey had circled around to get in front of the cat.. I was about ten feet from the cat when I noticed him lying on a branch above me. we had an argument about who was the prey and he retreated farther up the tree. I yelled for Stacey who was coming up the creek bottom and told her I had the cat treed. she took these pics for fun ... lion season is open but we didn't have a tag so let him go and just got pics.. what a fun day of Bunny hunting.. LOL hope you all enjoy. Hawk

awesome Hawk... I wouldn't have had the heart to shoot him, they are so rare here I have only seen one in the wild and it was crossing the road.  Those are some awesome pics though.     -josh

That IS very cool!!!  Good on ya Mike.  And obviously an ethical hunter to have one in your sights and a bow in hand and not take the shot.  I'm going to see if I can try for one this year.  I have a buddy who called one in and it's on video.  Free Grass and No Fences by Zepps Predator Calls.

weve got them here in mn. and they finaly admitted it after a drvier killed one with his car
he took it and had photoed by the local paper then contcated the dnr.

i hope they open a season,would love to get the chance for one.

Ryano, there were four different cats in the area.. one female with two two year old cubs hanging around.. this guy was seeing me as prey, he has been competing for food  believe... and was sick of being picked on.. LOL

Only the Hustons would push those cats in a foot of snow with just the reward of seeing one of them and a few pictures!  The first time I saw where the big tom had circled back across my tracks I would have been out of there!!  Although I think that big ole cat realized that Hawk would have been poor chewin being as how there would be nothing but rancid ole mountain whang leather and sinue to eat.  Now why he passed on Stacey I don"t know, maybe fear??  Joe

Watcher.. you are right even lions have tastebuds, but you have done the same thing chasing cats just for fun..

The cat is far larger than it looks in the pics, camera angle makes it look far away.. but the cool thing is that he is missing a big part of his tail. Wonder how he lost it!
