1st full size point on my own
« on: March 05, 2010, 12:14:45 am »
I've made a few points from thin flakes, but this is the first that I've knocked out on my own from a spall.  I know it's not great (too thick), but at least ended up with something besides lots of chips and dust!  I did get 4 or 5 flakes that I can make bird points from.  It was good practice anyway.  I actually got to use a hammer stone that my 8yr. old found lying around somewhere!  Sometimes curious little explorers can come up with some good stuff!  This point is made from heat treated novaculite.  Thanks for looking.

You're well on your way to "thinness" ;D  Everything else looks great. Not saying that it's too thick or anything...just that they'll get thinner ;)
Be thankfull for all you have, because no matter how bad you think it is...it can always be worse.

Thanks guys!  It only took me 2hrs. to make. ::)  I'm sure I'll get faster with more practice.  I can already see where this can be addictive!

Great job brownhill!  Don't worry about thinness, that will come with practice.  Also, if ya ever get a chance to get a lesson from an experienced flintknapper (or even just watch one work) you can learn a lot very quickly and it will greatly increase your learning curve..

Thanks again, guys.  Billy, I'd love to get some lessons, but I have been watching some videos on you tube and I think they've helped some.  Most people work so fast, it's hard to understand exactly what they're doing.
