Specific Gravity of bow wood?

(1/1)

Easternarcher:
just found out the S.G. of Jatoba is about .90....anybody know what IPE might be? or maybe elm?

snedeker:
Ipe is a little over 1.0

American elm is a bit over .55

You will have an average density for differetn types of wood and find that some woods adhere closer to these averages than others, most woods I have seen have a huge range of difference in density. Thats why I have gone to the mass method instead of the width method. Steve

Coo-wah-chobee:
...................................... Ipe can run like Dave (Snedecker) said a little over 1.0. That said I get ipe boards from brazil. This stuff has a specific gravity of  about 1.4. I've gotten a lot of it and its always pretty close. Like Steve said a lot of woods also can have a wide range of density. Mass method sounds sensible to me................bob

DCM:
Sorry, don't a link or South American/Tropical hardwoods.
