pics for JW and others who dont know coral
« on: August 10, 2010, 10:41:14 am »
this is a post about  our fine Florida coral, I get this from a county that was a huge reef bed when Fl. was under water. there are 2 types pinhead and polyped coral. Pinhead tends to be the "top shelf" stuff, gem quality, also harder to find than the polyped.

Coral is a hardness of 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. when cooked yellows turn to orange orange turns to red, some browns turn pinkish red ,clear turns to a china white  This stuff is and was prized by flintknappers of today and ancient times.. allso found with some of this coral is chert, more like compressed algea found in layers with the coral, different areas have different colors some browns and some blakc or greys like the "Ledge" we find

cherts and ;edge

The secret is out. All you have to do is plant a few nodules in your back yard, water it real good with the garden hose and presto! You grow a back yard full of coral heads. Could you send me one or two of those nodules so I can get a garden started in my backyard. Great pics!

Thanks so much for posting that short primer on coral.  I'm not a rockknocker, have done it in the past with Knife River flint up in North Dakota and made serviceable points, but have enough on my plate for now.

I do have a friend that knocks rock and would love to get some for him some day.
