Sgian Dubh
« on: December 24, 2010, 04:37:14 pm »
I've been in a knife making mood lately, and I've been working on this one pretty intensely for about a week and a half.

It still needs another coat or two of finish, but I was a little too eager to show it off.

Anyway, this is my sgian dubh; a small Scottish knife. The blade is made from leaf spring steel, with a slightly convex bevel that covers the full width of the blade. The handle and sheath are of red oak with cocobolo accents. The vinework, I don't think, is as nice as my last one, but it'll do.  ;)
The sheath is my first wooden one, and it just about killed me to get the blade to fit correctly. But what's on the inside won't show, eh?
Overall (sheathed), it's about 8" long, and the blades measures just under 3.5".

It's a bit heavy for the traditional Scotch use for these knives, that being sort of an original 'boot knife', but I don't wear the tall socks that I would need to slide it into.  ;)

The knife has a very sturdy feel to it. But that's probably due to the really thick blade.  ;D

That is a interesting knife...I like it.  Making the wooden sheath had to be tough. :)
Happy hunting to all!

Looks great. I would be proud to be wearing that in my kilt sock. Now make a dirk to match!

WOW that is cool

Thanks for the kind words, guys, it was a fun project to work on.

I learned a lot from it, too.  ;)

And Mark, yep that's the plan; I want to make a dirk/sgian set. Fun stuff.  ;D

How did you carve and fit the sheath and grip to the blade??? Most of them that i've seen are two pieces chiseled and glued together. Great work btw.

It was difficult for the first time....
It took a lot more focused work than I'm used to, simply doing the job at hand instead of trying to get to the finished product asap.
Yes, the handle and sheath were cut out of a single piece of wood that started out about 10" long.
