Bowyers Bench/Shaving Horse
« on: January 07, 2011, 02:25:51 pm »
Figured I could maybe give back a little to the people here on PA with these plans.

A couple things you can adjust for a personal fit:
1)  The legs.  Find a bench or chair that is a good height for you and make the bench that height.
2)  The vertical platform support.  Once the seat is made, legs attached, and platform cut out, sit on the bench at experiment with different platform angles/heights to find what is most comfortable for you.
3)  The foot plate.  Since the arm is offset to the left side of the bench, the footplate needs to extend to the right side more so that both feet can reach it comfortably.  The drawing is wrong in that the foot plate width dimensions need to be wider to accommodate this change.

One thing I would change if I were to make another shaving horse is to have two arms, one on each side of the bench.  So instead of cutting the slot in the platform and the seat for the movement of the arm, I would just attach one on each side of the bench.  This would also give equal tension when pressing down with your feet and max holding power.  The only disadvantage would be that you have to insert the piece of wood your working on from the front/top.

I just use a wooden dowel for the arm pivot.  This can be removed when needing to change the height of the arm to accept bigger logs.

PM me with any questions.

Nice bowyers bench, Cherokee.  I centered the knucklehead so I could work from either side.

These benches are a joy to work with, really makes for handy adjustments to the stave while you are working.  Saves a lot of that time spent clampi9ng and unclamping from a table top.   I'd really like one that breaks down for easy transport to rondezvous and trade shows.
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

I have made a couple different designs. I like a vise in an open area so I can work all the way around.

Now that is neat. You did a great job on both the horse and the plans. Well done!  God Bless

What kind of wood is it from?
Would spruce or pine be okay for building a shaving horse like this or would be not strong enough?

Greetings, Felix

you might also consider putting a 1 inch or bigger dowel in the far end of the bench (proud of the surface) so you can push the far end of a stave against it thereby securing the stave side to side while hogging off sap wood, etc.

looks really nice! your an expert woodworker.
the only thing that worries me is the legs.. shaving horses get a lot of abuse and back and forth sway
and after awhile you might need to re-stabilize.
here's the most sturdy shaving horse i've seen..'course there are millions of variations out there. google shaving horse and WOW!

when i'm working on things my ancestors worked, singing the songs my ancestors sang, dancing the same dances, speaking the same language, only then  I feel connected to the land, THIS land, where my ancestors walked for thousands of years...

Nice little horse Cherokee. Looks like you're a pretty good Sketchup jockey as well.
