stupid idea
« on: June 24, 2011, 02:57:47 am »
So Ive decided to try this abo tackle making hobby a try.  It looks like a lot of fun, and ive been on the edge of it for a while.  Anyhow heres the stupid idea with a little backstory.

I do gun shows for a living all over the south, everything s of ky and e of co.  Its a pretty cool deal, but the point is im pretty well always at the forefront of the huge commercialism of the shooting/hunting industry....which i find more than slighty distasteful.  I grew up very poor and unable to afford things like I have on my website, so always made what I could, like arrows from dowel rods, and sharpened bits of metal for points fletched with whatever featners were around the chicken/turkey coops.  I always appreciated those things, and think that ingenuity and use of what was at hand wereimportant charachter traits.

Furthermore I think that most of the appeal of this hobby is that you can make EVERYTHING yourself and get the materials from nature or by trade without ever needing anything from bass pro

So my stupid plan is to make my first set of tackle, bow and arrows, without spending a dollar.  except on shipping for trades and fuel to the shipping place.....and I guess internet would have to be counted cause theres no way ill make a functional  bow without help.  And the stuff I have to trade obviously cost money at some point, but its in my way now, so that doesnt count.

Im already in the process of acquiring thetools from various people in the trading post, and i have a line on a few staves to wreck.  I got a ton of arrow shaft material from a local source.  So I think im on the way.

By the way the money restriction is just for the first set, and they dont have to be perfect, just functional.

This oughta be a hoot

Dan, that is way more doable than you probably think.  Just image what tools and materials that were available to the Native Americans: basically stones, trees and animal parts.  Well, these are still available.  Ok, a completely primitive set is stepping way back.  A couple days ago I was roughing out a bow and complaining that my sureform wasn't taking wood off as fast as I thought it should.  Then I thought about how the NA's could have accomplished so much more with my dull tool than they might have with their stone tools, and felt grateful.  So, what did I do?  I went to Lowe's for new blade for my sureform.  They were out, so I went to Ace.  They had one, but I was sure that that brand would match my tool.  The next day I was back in Lowe's for another project list and bought an electric hand planer.  That electric hand planer will sure make fast work of roughing in a bow.  But, first I want to practice on a scrap piece of wood.  All in all I have spent more time and energy getting the "perfect" tool than I would have done by using my dull sureform.  hahaha

My advice to you, if you're want to get started quickly building a bow at no cost, sale something and use the money to buy red oak board from a hardware store.  Also, post for a trade here for a stave.  While waiting for the trade to happen go cut down a tree so it will be seasoning while your working on the oak board and then the stave.

Welcome to the addiction.

Start pumping and reeling, boys...this one's gut-hooked!!!!  He's not only swallowed hook, line, and sinker, but he's gobbled the rod, reel, and the fisherman's arm up to the elbow!

Oh, Triggerfinger....welcome to my world!  It really flies in the face of the "gotta have the latest and greatest" mentality doesn't it?
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

i think its funny, i spend 30-40 hrs a week telling people why they need the newest whatchamagizit.  And that effort tends to convince me that I dont, this is the definition of dichotomy.

update on the plan.

It appears that i have traded one of the members for a basic tool kit containing a draw knife ( sold one of these on ebay a few years back, stupid murphy and his laws) some scrapers and a tillering string.  Some stone points,a book, some turkey feathers and probably something im forgetting.  I Have access to the power tools necessary so I think im on the way to wrecking my first stave, which I also got from this guy.  So how many staves does the average newbie wreck before he gets something thatll sling arrows

take your time and go slow and ask a bunch of questions and you dont have to wreck ANY staves...  I got a shooter out of my first try.  My boss still has it and it still shoots 3 years later.   :)  Good luck and remember to be patient.  The fastest bows are created slowly.  :)

I'd recommend printing out Josh's advice and taping it above your bench, I was/am the guy who is always in a hurry and too impatient  ::)
